The Strangest Thing You Have Ever Sold

Whenever someone hears that I am also an auctioneer, the question comes up..

"What is the strangest thing you have ever sold?"

Up until last week the answer was all of the equipment and props from an adult photo studio. You haven't lived until you have explained to someone that it would be inappropriate to offer used sex toys at a public sale. Anyway.........

On Friday one of my best clients called. We started as we usually do, joking around. We have this thing about bad grammar, so we joke about it. Use the word "be" in a sentence. He thought this was extremely funny this time. I obviously didn't get the joke.

He wanted to know what I knew about impregnating bees. I think he is still joking, so I tell him that it probably involves getting stung a lot.

Long and short of it is that this morning we are going to look at a project where we will be selling artificially inseminated bees.

This has nothing to do with real estate, yet, but it is getting interesting around here.

Really, I have no idea. You know anything about bees or just know that you have some around?

Rich, I'm serious. Bees are used to pollenate the citrus groves. Gear your advertising towards citrus growers or bee keepers. They are all over Florida.

I will essentially be taking over this company, so I will probably learn a lot about bees. I have found out that there are associations and the whole thing. I will be looking into the growing states.

Hi Rich, my father in law has a bunch of beehives here at our house and down in his back yard. He insists that when he gets injured he grabs a handful of bees and allows them to sting him where he is injured and then he is cured.

Works for him.

I also heard on the news that there are a lot of Honey Bees that are diseased and the population is dwindling. Maybe a profitable venture. He knows a lot about bees. We just came from their house. Too bad I didn't read this post earlier, I could ask him what he thinks about your new adventure if you like?

Not only are they used for pollinating the groves they're used in natural cosmetics here. Bee's wax cosmetics help me maintain my 'lovely' ... :)

And hey there is nothing wrong with selling "bedroom accessories" you can now buy them at home parties like tuperware use to or may still be.

It bee funny Rich..... I do wonder though..........how does one artificially inseminate a bee???

I can certainly understand why there would not be much of a market for "slightly used inventory" for your other item. LOL!!!!

Shauna - I am sure there is a market for that, I just didn't want to find it. Scary. I beeeelieve I will be educated on how to inseminate a bee in the next 24 hours.

Rich, just prowling like I mentioned. Now I know your bee story. I think it's great that you were able to get some good feedback from your regular readers.

I have artifically inseminated both horses and cows so maybe I can explain a little about this.

The concept is not new. Probably cattle were the first widespread use of Artifical Insemination in the US. Today the majority of dairy cattle are AI'ed. AI of dogs is becoming very popular. Horses, goats, and sheep are being AI'ed. I believe that the lady that is the guru of AI for bees is in Indiana.

Like any other species there are superior and inferior examples. With AI they are trying to produce a superior strain, hopefully resistant to the 2 mites that are killing a lot of the bees in the wild. The problem that is killing many bees today is colony collapse. Hopefully they can breed a strain that is resistant to it also.

I believe that the next major crop that needs to be pollinated is the pecan crop in the West. From my understanding they are begging for stands of bees to do the pollination

Rich, I spoke to my father in law the day we headed to Myrtle Beach and i spoke about the AI of bees to him. he said it is important to AI bees from Canada as they are not polluted with disease like some from the southern states. looks like itcould be profitable for you as he believe swe are in need of more bees. Good luck.

The bee case has taken a twist and the hearing has been postponed for a couple of weeks. I guess there are some "bees in transit". What a mess.
