I know that many of you have seen the ads that are flying around about credit. They may seem to have some humor behind them, but there is nothing funny about having your identity stolen. Credit fraud is on the rise and there are a few ways that you can combat this. I thought that I would go over a few ways to stay safe.

The first would be to purchase a shredder. You can get these from places like Staples or Office Max or you can check to see if Sams Club or Costco might have them in stock. All mail that has your information printed on it, you shred. This would even include envelopes if it displays name and property address. Once it is shred you can also send it to recycling.

Another safety precaution is never store your credit card information or personal information on line. It does not take a lot for a hacker to get into your system and get out what they need. Also, do not open or respond to suspicious emails. Emails also that offer something that seems to good to be true can be phishing for information.

Another great selection is credit monitoring. This is where you have a company that monitors the activity on your credit report and emails you when there is a change in your credit. This is important as in the fact that someone steals your credit and tries to use it, early detection is the key to checking the criminals. There are many companys that offer this service and I have added a few below. Click on their pictures and it will take you to a secure website to learn more and sign up for their service.

Now, companies like this can also help you get your credit straightened out too. If you have some issues on your report and you want to start cleaning them up, then you can also take on one of these offers and over time be able to clean them up. If you seek quicker service than that, then search out a credit repair expert that can help you do just that.

There a lot of people needing credit help.  Its good to have some good options to help work on the credit.

I use one of the credit monitoring companies and I get an email anytime there is a change to my credit report.  If I were to suspect anything, I could freeze my credit accounts almost immediately.

Chuck, having options is the first step.

Hope, that is what makes it a great thing.

Danny, I have a friend who's identity was stolen and she's spent about three years trying to build it back up. The good news? The woman responsible was found and sentenced to prison earlier this year and my friend now has identity theft protection.

Debbie. I think that any person that is concerned about their credit needs to have this.

Hey, Danny. Great information. You know, I always get emails from banks telling me my account will be terminated or some other BS line. Odd thing about those emails is I don't have accounts with those companies so I know it's all about phishing and don't bother to open them. But, what about those that do have accounts with those banks and panic... they are the ones that get hurt by these scammers.

I speak to at least one potential client a week who claims to have been the victim of identity theft. This type of crime seems to be on the rise. I like the shredding on junk mail and other sensitive info. It is also important for people to remember that there are things that should be kept in a lock box or other secure location and not shredded. Many a divorce decree, lien release, award letter, etc. have been shredded and the result is a protracted wait to get copies of these when needed. One should definitely be selective when shredding.

Rich, that is a great point and I have to agree. I do not know how many times I would have to use PACER when I was with Countrywide.

Danny,  that is all good information.  But as an Identity Theft Specialist I can only tell you that is only the tip of the iceberg.   Shredding may avoid losing info in the garbage can, but what about the mail that never even gets delivered to you.  Everyone should use a locked mailbox.    But even these things will not keep a criminal from forging a drivers license and committing a crime in your name.  Or stealing your medical records and having a medical procedure done in your name.  Or stealing your Social Security number and getting a job using your SSN.   The average consumer is so uneducated on all the ways your identity can be stolen.  I work with a company that covers all 5 types of identity theft, not just credit cards.
