There is a statute of a family of bronze wolves that reside at Wolf Pen Creek Park in College Station.

Earlier today, we had the opportunity to meet Payne Lara, the sculptor, at Producers Coop's special event called the "National Day of the COWBOY."   Afterwards, I found myself wishing that I would have thought to ask him how he came up with the sculpture's name - "Wilderness Awakened."

Wolf Pen Creek Park is one of  the City of College Stations crown jewels.  The 19 acre park two nicest highlights include the Amphitheater and very nice walk and bike trails that cross a creek in several spots.   It is a refreshing, outdoor experience.

The sculpture is situated at the Holleman street entrance to the park.

According to an information board at the site, legend has it that wolves roamed the area up until the early 1920's. Most wildlife tend to go to creeks, as we call them here in Texas, to drink.

According to a Los Angeles Times Article on Gray wolves, "rampant hunting up until the 1930's almost wiped them out across the American West."

So, there may be some truth to the legend.

Look at the expression on the parent's faces - very watchful.  And then the pups....they do not have a care in the world.

If you haven't had chance to see "Wilderness Awakened" up close and personal, it is worth seeing.  After-wards, you can stroll along the trails, plan to come to the next concert at the Amphitheater, maybe visit the Texas Gallery at the Arts Center building or play a game of disc golf.  (I've still got to learn a little about that game myself.)

Notice the water fall.  Payne Lara worked in conjunction with landscape designer Larry Schueckler to create what is considered one of College Station's nicest displays of public art.  It was completed it in late 2001.

Art, at it's best, is supposed to speak to each of us.

What do you think of when you see  "Wilderness Awakened?"

Sondra, looks like Payne had a great time making these, especially the two that are playing.

Sondra, this is just beautiful! As often as I've visited your area I've never been to the park. I will now! This is truly a work of art...one after another. I love the feeling that goes along with the name "wilderness awakened". It's brilliant. Thanks for such a lovely post.

Wilderness Awakened is a great name for this art.  It touches me deeply and hopefully, many will be touched and understand what we are doing to the land.  The wildlife need a place to live to. Thanks for sharing a great place with us.
