I ate lunch with Frank Chapple

yesterday.  Great lunch.  We talked politics, people, history, and then sales.  Frank owned TV stations in the past, and is now engaged in the mortgage business.  We miss the old days.

I'm 52, and Frank is - well - older.  He speaks of things before my time, so I know this.

I've heard Realtors complain for years about how Mortgage people don't return phone calls.  You know the old saying, point one finger towards someone, 3 point back at you...

I can understand some people not calling me back.  I'm a Broker, I'm in recruiting mode.  Probably pisses them off.  Don't want my calls, tired of people calling them.  But, what if I'm a buyer?  A lister?  What about Frank?  They don't know him, except that he's been around Wichita for years.  He's been head of our Chamber of Commerce, a pilot, very well connected.  I started thinking MAYBE the problem is bigger than just my recruiting.  Maybe Realtors don't return LOTS of calls!!

I've had 4 people PROMISE to call me back with decisions on moving from their company in the last week.  3 of them didn't call, and won't return my calls.  No email, nothing.  1 person had an appointment and just didn't show up.  I called, no response.  I emailed, and he told me that the morning had gone bad, but he still wanted to meet (Second meeting, finalize plans), he just got too busy...

I've certainly forgot appointments.  I've been held up.  I've had calls I tried to duck.  But I also try and get some sort of response.  Like not interested, don't call, Give me time to think about it.  I REALLY try to return calls I promise to return.

Realtors spend TONS trying to get quick response, cell phones, text messages, email on phone, contacts from our web to cell.  I'm now working with Cell Signs to get homes to text, and text for appointment by the consumer.  All this, and we can't call each other back.

I guess Frank and I are irritation, and they would NEVER treat a customer that way, Right?  Or another Realtor trying to Coop?  WRONG.  I get calls from my agent's clients and coop Realtors asking WHY someone won't call them back.

Our industry is in TROUBLE, from the economy, from the inventory, from information access by the general public, from Web access by FSBO's, from bad press.  And here we are helping them kill it.

This isn't a threat, but I'm saying publicly:  I'm thinking maybe I've out lived my time in this industry.  If we can't treat humans better than this, maybe I'll turn my attentions to my photography, my web art, advertising for others.  I'm tired of getting POOR treatment....

PS:  My Wife say's I'm so DESPERATE to return my calls, I'll write while driving to call someone I DON'T EVEN LIKE just to make sure I don't miss something....

Greg, Yes it is sad.  Especially since now we have all the tools at our fingertips via our smart phones.  My husband gets really mad when I email clients at night.  The truth of the matter is I will forget if I do not!  The next day will start with challenges and problems.

Greg - you've nailed my pet peeve!  There are too many people out there pretending to be busy when in realty they're just unorganized, lazy, selfish individuals who feel their time is far more valuable than someone elses.   The number of voicemailboxes that are full is just amazing to me.  In our office it is because they don't know how to leave a message in the first place.   I hate to hear voicemails saying "Hi, it's Joe, call me back"

NO JOE, this is not how it is done.  I knew it was you - I heard you.  Tell me what you want so when I get your voicemail I can leave an answer and we'll not play telephone tag for days!

People today simply do not know how to (or won't) prepare a To Do List and then follow it.  They don't know how to get through their daily non-negotiables.  To me, they are the same as brushing my teeth each morning or taking a shower.  Things that you wouldn't consider not doing each and every day.   How many schedule phone time each day?  How many schedule an hour dedictated just to themselves to do whatever is the priority of the day?    These are the things that I believe should be taught at the beginning of the business.  You need to start the way you want to finish.  There, my rant is complete so thank you for reading!!

It's just rudeness not to call back. And we see it every day. I don't know how some agents make any money at all. They just don't have time to call a broker or another agent--or a client!--back????

No. They didn't want to. It didn't rank up there on their MUST DO list.

I also had 2 agents who I was recruiting, both of whom indicated they were coming with me. Both said they needed a few weeks to clean up their accounts. I emailed each regularly, to keep in touch. Neither one had the guts or courtesy to call or email me... they both went with other firms. A courtesy call goes a long way.

One even went so far as to have me start the process of paperwork, and then he just dropped off the radar. Unbelievable.

Ah.  Well mine did call.  One Sat, one last week.  I've got to give them props for that.  Both decided somewhere else (burst my bubble...), but I'm moving on to others.  Maybe better for me?  I'm looking for those "just ready to get good" agents that need a little help to get over the hurdle....

You have hit on one of my pet peeves....if you are going to be in this business or any business you should be professional enough to return your calls promptly....

I agree,  agents need to return calls.  Even when I am calling agents to give them leads I do not get calls back.  I am handing the agents customers on a platter,  No work needed, just call them back.  It is a big pet peeve of mine too because then the clients call me (office manager) at the office to complain about the agents not calling them back.  Agents pick up your phone and return a call
