Sometimes when you write often enough you do get ideas about another topic you would like to throw out there but then in your mind you determine that no one would really be interested. I have to credit fellow Associate and excellent Realtor from Myrtle Beach, SC Mirela Monte for encouraging me to write this one. It is entitled, "My Blogging Success Secrets."

Boy ThinkingI hesitated to write this because I don't consider myself a master blogger of the likes of a Sally Cheeseman or Jason Crouch. I don't want to tell others what to write. But Mirela said I knew enough about what worked for me, so to go ahead and share that.

So here are a few things that worked for me and pick and choose if it fits with your writing.

1) Make the topic interesting as best you can. Lenn Harley does great market reports but she adds commentary and color maps.

Little Girl Writing

I had a discussion with Sondra Meyer that I COULD NOT in good conscience write about a new elementary school opening down the block because it didn't interest me. She suggested just be me. I would write it with an interview of a child or video taping the school buses rolling in and upload that. Please, BE YOURSELF. Some like market reports and ones like Patricia Beck have the best 3D bar charts I've ever seen.

Some are so good at details like Liz Moras I am still awestruck by her posts. But play to your strengths and make it interesting.

2) Answer Your Mail. This is done so infrequently in the Rain that Mirela pointed out that she liked that I did it. Comment on your comments as time permits. It is what makes a blog a conversation. If my faves could see the BIG SMILE I get when they first comment on my blog and next comment on my comments on their blogs they would do this all the time. If you get a FEATURE POST and get a bazillion comments you are excused on this one.

Boy Writing

3) Circle Back to Read. When you come back to look at a post from one of your fave writers on another day, scroll down and see if they responded to the last comment you wrote on their blog. Don't miss this. It keeps you knowing what they are thinking about you and provides you more knowledge about them.

4) This one is especially for Newbies. Try to come up with at least one graphic or photo that matches the text of your thoughts. This draws the reader in and like a magazine article creates stickiness and initial interest in what you are writing about. Get them from your own stock, Photobucket, Photoshop, clip art, Publisher, your own camera, but do not use anything you know is copyrighted.

5) Avoid writer's cramp and come up with blog ideas from your own life, your interests, making notes along the way in your day, and even reading others' blogs, talking to them, or reading the comments.

Boy Writing Wide6) Finally, find your voice. If you write enough a voice will emerge. Susan Mangigian and Carolyn Tann-Starr write some of the best Members Only posts. Dan and Irene Woodworth write great encouragement posts. Carol Culkin and Pat Kennedy write great day in the life of a Realtor posts. Carole Provenzale knows EVERYTHING about Feng Shui. You can't beat Jim Crawford for market trends. Barbara Duncan and Trey Thurmond and Deb Brooks know their backyards intimately and describe them so well. Leesa Finley knows historic homes and techy stuff. Lorrena Yeo talks about being a Realtor Mom while Charles Buell is in crawl spaces in Washington State telling us about inspections. Fran the Title Man gives us more info on the settlement business while Jason Sardi keeps us posted on mortgages. Military relocations? How about Cynthia Tilghman? Blurbs from the burbs? Judy Greenberg. Realtor in Idaho? Pam Pugmire. Vegas? Arina Hanciulescu. Alaska? My man Jesse Clifton. Long Island? Adam Waldman. Charlotte? Debe Maxell. Southeast Fla? Neal Bloom, Katerina, Broker Bryant and TLW. Virginia? Chris Ann, Kate, and Charles, Staging? Kathy Passarette, Cathy LeeHundreds if not thousands of other voices out there too that space here limits me.

The point in blogging is a circle of conversation going between all of us with respect, energy, humor, honesty, and what time you can give to it. It will be very rewarding to you if you work it. This is what I have found so far. My recommendation? Give it a go. It will take you places you have never been to before. And isn't that what life is all about? One big adventure!! Enjoy the ride.

Thanks for the tips. You mentioned to comment on the comments, but I have had to show restraint in some cases. I think what makes AR attractive to me is the difference in opinion and most bloggers are friendly in nature. I have learned to avoid certain areas of AR, such as some local cities that I know nothing about. Seems that some agents dont like others posting that are not from their own area. Anywho, thanks again, I'll put some of your suggestions to use.

Gary ~ I like the "circle of conversation" - how true!  I check back to see if people have responded to the comments I have made on their posts.  When they don't, I am disappointed, as if what I said was not worth acknowledging.  After three, four times of the person not responding, I stop commenting.  I respond to every comment I get on my posts and I appreciate that most people do (you especially, Gary, you are so good about it).

LaShawn: Mirela made a good point to me that I make to everyone else and that is to be yourself. Sometimes we don't know where that will take us but it is what we should do.

Michael: Thanks, and I hope your weekend goes well too.

Charles: You are a hidden gem in the crawl space that more people need to find out about.

Sharon: On the Active Rain newbies group they have the directions to do that. Search around and if you can't find it let me know and I can help you.

Pam: There are some interesting characters here to read about for sure.

Darrel: Where I have seen the controversy is political or religious heated debates. That is probably normal. Didn't know it was is certain local groups too. Find the groups that work for you and the "people" that work for you.

Dan: Thanks as always for all your encouragement. Mirela pushed me to give my thoughts so here I went and hopefully something will stick to somebody. My point on answering mail I wish I would see on more blogger's posts. If you have only five comments how much time does it take to write a quick reply? That is the whole point of blogging. Conversation!!

Amanda: I like your style. You are one of the brightest, funniest, commenters (and hijackers). I feel the love any time you show up. And if you would write a blog of your own more often I would have a place to retaliate respond : )

Latonia: Venting is great if you get the crowd to vent with you. Carrying the camera like you do around is something I need to do more often. I have it in my bag typically but I need it in my pocket.

Deb: High honor coming from a great one like you. Thanks for the Wizard of Oz photo. You are absolutely one our funniest and most real Rainers!!

Diane: Thanks for your faith in me. I was telling Mirela I just didn't want to tell others that have been at this so much longer than me, telling them what to write. My humbleness comes off like lack of confidence but I am actually a very confident person. You should see me in anything competitive. Look out.

Richard: I do the photo first and text second often too. I call that reverse blogging. Sometime the photo gives me the idea.

Carole: Attracting those like yourself or other helpers into your life I firmly believe in. If readers of this post get down to this comment I will let them know that you are a terrific example of one to follow both in excellent posts and all your comments on your blog and on others.

Fran: Your wisdom is showing again my friend. A tapestry woven together that is greater than the sum of its parts. You are painting a very beautiful picture here. Very high level of insight there.

Liz: I like that honing your own voice thought. Go ahead and write it if you still feel like it. We all come at these subjects from a slightly different view. Yours would be rich in the depth of content I know. You are right we all have our own gifts.

Kathy: You being one of my great understanders of the circle of conversation I added your link above. You are very good at this. I see your point about it is hard to have a one sided conversation and eventually you give up on some. You wonder if they are listening or just too busy.

Kate: We all should publish our 25 who we read bloggers most of the time to see how similar or not so similar the lists are. That would be fun. The comments on your comments feel real good. Like someone really is listening. I try to do that if the post doesn't get too many comments and I have the time.

Lisa: Feel free to read some of these other people and see if you mesh with them or not. Just a lot of different views out there. Your are my Princeton connection.

Jason: You write such diverse material, work so many contests, and just have the energy to write so many posts. Getting a following like you know takes time. I have never asked for subscriptions yet people find me. Isn't that amazing. I know you have a tremendous subscription list. It amazes me.

Jennifer: Thanks for your thoughts. We should have like a contest to write about mashed potatoes and gravy and see how you can make that interesting :)

Mirela: This all started with your encouragement of me to give my thoughts. Hopefully a good post for The Optimist Group!! ; )

Sally: I just tap into all that positive energy you have around you. And, YES you are a Master Blogger. You are just too modest.

Debbie: Good writers to check out and see if any you would like to read regularly.

Pam: More here on the Rain are going to find about you and your brilliant self courtesy of the Batman. I don't miss anything you write about. Wouldn't for the world ; ) Plus, like so many others here, WHAT a sense of humor.

Carolyn Tann-Starr: C, you are just one of my favorites. So down to earth, spiritual, loving, and a joy to read. Now I find out you are an artist. We have our very own AR artist in our midst. When do your talents end? I agree I trip on Mandy too with her serial commenting.

Derenda: Your voice is perfectly fine. Always Derenda, BE YOURSELF. I like that world tour theme. Very good observation.

Trey: I was trying also to let everyone know of your wonderful voice that you have from your area. I feel like I live next door to you from the really great stuff you write about. For example on those hand dug wells in Texas, we had a discussion at lunch the other day about that because of you, and how historic they were.

Paul: Thanks, I very much enjoy your perspective too.

Mirela: The secret of any kind of mastery in this I firmly believe is in the "conversations" we have with each other.

Good Morning Gary...

I came from Google alerts too. I have his and her alerts set up :)

Anyway, blog posts like this one inspire the newer bloggers to get off their thumbs and start typing. I love watching new members find that oh so elusive voice. It's not half as hard as it seems. Sometimes we just have to keep at. I still occasionally struggle with my voice. As soon as someone starts mimicking my style I have to find a new voice. Good thing I love a challenge as there can only be ONE TLW. As of late I find myself inventing new words that only I could come up with. That helps to keep me unique so I'm not completely lost in the rain. Now see I found inspiration here. I am going to write a post about being "Lost In The Rain". P.S. I have five bucks that says someone reads that and steals it :)

Thanks Gary.  These market reports are a very important part of my Internet presence.  I never run out of things to write about and I know many on ActiveRain who can write reams of material on a myriad of subjects, news, recent experiences with consumers, office events, agency, contracts, inspections, etc., etc.  There is just no end ot the subjects or experiences that can inspire posts.

I believe that folks don't post much because they don't understand the value of blogging, don't like to write or - - - - can't type.

Chris: Name dropping never hurts, but you can not write down everyone you want to talk about so this is a very tough area. Maybe an ace up your sleeve to use at select times? In the ThemThem group you can focus and highlight just one. Some contests they let you highlight 8 or more.

Liz: I can't do that comment individually thing by each name. Once again not my style. How did I get to be such a contrarian on this stuff? Oh yes, that's me, being me againg ; )

Debe: Reciprocating to me is the fun part in the Rain with blogging and learning more about each other on the personal level. Real estate is just one part of who we are. Your post on your family was one of the best I ever read.

Cynthia: You are such a giving person for the folks in your area. I hear that voice of yours coming out loud and clear. Thanks for your kindness.

Eva: When you find pix you like save them away for a future time.

TLW: There will always be just "one" TLW. Hope your surgery goes well, and lay off the smokes, that's what got you in this jam. You make us all ROAR!!

Missy: Good point on not using up too much of your time commenting back. With featured posts in particular if they get out of control you just have to let them free one. Even on the great post comment I will make something up back. Give me two words and I will give you ten words back. Great fun. You are my star in Ann Arbor Missy, I just wanted to let you know.

Marzena: I like these good addictions. They make us all better.

Charles: Your tag line is one of the best on AR, Your friend in Charlottesville, and your blog is awesome.

Christopher and Stephanie: Keep reading the tech stuff particularly from Brad Andersohn. He is a guru in the techy department.

Susan: Great reminder, I knew what they are but haven't set them up either. TLW has the link in her second comment.

Kathy: I didn't overlook wonderful you, I just got tired of typing and adding all those links. But you are special, not only because of who you are and what you do with your work, but you are one of the best bloggers and commenters here on AR. You have been with me since Day One, helping me out. You are one of the few that gets it with the circle of conversation. You should remind all those you blog with on the Staging side about that often as it really helps us all learn faster if we keep talking.

Lenn: You are a model of consistency for me, not to mention your wealth of industry experience and how it helps your business. People should just stick with blogging like writing a journal. I think they make it harder than it really is.

Neal: I don't have any real secrets, this stuff is just common sense. I do think people should comment on the comments if they can find the time. It is like answering a question or thinking about a thought someone just gave you. But the tradeoff is it does take time. You've had some good secrets yourself with Localism and how they turned into cash in your business, so you know a trick or two yourself.

Don: I love your posts from your area of the country and am always learning from you.

TLW: Now you've made Susan and all the others dangerous with the Google alerts. As if we aren't moving in the Internet fast enough already. Now we've built an early warning system. I'll get you some smokes from my wife. I still haven't got her to stop yet.

Broker Bryant: Right you are. Just work it and it really does go somewhere.

Gita: Thanks for your idea, I moved this also into the ThemThem category. You are one of my favorite bloggers.

Dick: My wife says the same thing to toot my own horn more. I am probably the least "puffed up" person you will ever meet, so that part doesn't come natural to me.

Celeste: Thanks, I tweaked the background look and header to spice things up a bit.

Elizabeth: The writing is incredibly easy if you can believe that. It just feels natural to me.

Mana: Your posts from your area of the world I look forward to reading too every time you post a new one. I love in particular your family stories.

Mirela: Those feature things come out of nowhere don't they? Hopefully a few ideas for everyone. You're the one that got me going on this one. Thanks.

I do hope I mentioned this before, but I am personally delighted to see you as a member of our new group as well. Looking forward to knowing and reading more of your fine work, Gary! We share the friendship of many others here on AR and I am looking forward to sharing yours as well.

Barbara: You write so well with your Searcy, AR viewpoint I had to include you in my list.

Hi Lynda: There are many great writers I have stumbled upon like yourself along the way. I was going to ask you the same question about the time to put together blogs because you include much text and pictures yourself. Writing is easy for me so it doesn't take me much time other than finding some graphics to go with it. This one I had to insert a bunch of links so I did that in two steps. Couldn't get to them all at once. Jason Crouch is the one that amazes me. He writes more blogs than anyone I know.

Gary-  Great ideas to get people blogging.  I think getting the first sentence down is sometimes the hardest part of writing a blog.

I already follow some of the names to which you linked, but your list gives me a whole new set of bloggers, to discover.

I always have my camera with me and I try to take pics to add to my blogs.  It's always nice to have someone comment on your blog and I always try to respond to them.  It's disappointing when your comment isn't acknowledged.  If the comments are too numerous, at least a "thanks everyone" comment should be added.

Wow. The list of bloggers that you have on this post makes this a nice resource for the rest of us. I really appreciate people that take a risk and put their personality out there. I once had a fellow student who had to give a speech. After a few minutes it became apparent he had nothing to say. He finally admitted to the class - "I just couldn't come up with any to talk about." My prof gave him and the class a piece of advice or nugget =  READ. Reading generates ideas. Can't get ideas out of a vacuum.

Many others, too but I had to cut the blog short. I never mean to leave anyone out, I hope they know that.

Jason: You are the man in your field. And I hope many find the greater writer and professional from your material.

Duane: A few people for the ThemThem, so I had to remember your group.

Loreena: I just keep plugging along when I'm near the keyboard.

Allen: You are welcome. I hope something was there that YOU could use.

Kevin: I gotta be me. Like me or lump me, and see where this train goes. They say you have to risk to grow. It is like love. You venture forth with your hand. Sometimes it is embraced, sometimes it is bitten. You never know. Risking is worth it, I have found in life.

Hey Teresa: This one on blogging tips was inspired by Mirela here on Active Rain in just a conversation back and forth with her comments where she said what I thought about what I learned could help others. I didn't think anyone would care particularly, but she kept pushing me. The final product here got a lot of comments and they even featured it. Go figure. Shows what I know. I have to listen to you all. You're much smarter than me. Thanks for your kind words. You take care too.

Gary - I noticed your comment to Sondra -- help out the orphan posts. So what is your take on GPTFS (Great Post Thanks For Sharing") comments? Some people on AR dislike them -- feel it is a newbie way to gain points?

Kevin: Sorry to get back to you so late on this one. Great post is too easy a comment. I think, personally you could add some more thought to it. Forget the points, they will come. Expressing yourself I think should be more than just two words. Some newbies could be gaming the system all over with great post to get points. But what is the point? You are not exchanging anything very meaningful. The depth of communicating between two people needs to go beyond that. I don't even know if great post even means they really read anything you wrote.

Hi Coco: Blogs in general for me I do fast, but adding in the links took some time and I did it in two parts because I didn't have time to sit down at one sitting and get it all done. It helps you just click on a name and go to their blog. No secret on that part, just WORK!!! : )

Hi Brenda: Glad you are working hard to understand this wild world that is the Rain. Comment of comments is essentially learning by reading. Say for example like above you left me a comment. I reply to your comment. You come back and read what I said to you and learn. Of course, me being a conscientious blogger commented on your comment to begin with. Many don't. It's a good habit to get into. Have fun.

Justin and Katie: Actually carefully crafted photos with text holds the interest of the reader. The linking back to other bloggers I have read and become friends with, on my part, was not for points, however it never hurts ; ) But I wanted to give you a sense for areas of specialty in writing. Find your voice and run with it. Some write self promoting posts which are from the high ego types. That is definitely not me, but we are all different, as you see when you read around. Just be whoever you are. It is the natural way to go.
