Here's a question for more tech savvy folks than myself - (if I call you out by name will you respond? NikNik? 4realz, Jim Cronin, Mary Mcknight, Kay Frenzer, Karen George, or ... Matt Cutts)

Does paying $300 to be listed in the Yahoo Directory really have as big an effect on SEO as it appears to be?

I know that paying for ads on Google doesn't help with organic results, why would paying Yahoo, the competition, have such a postive effect on Google?

There are three websites above me on Google for my favorite search "Leavenworth Real Estate" and the Yahoo Directory seems to be a common thread.

I hate to shell out the money, but if it puts me atop the listings on Google or even #2, that would certainly be worth it.

I'm no expert, but I stay away from paying for anything Internet-related. There are so many free ways to do it. But like you said, if it gets you in the top 2 or 3, well worth it I would imagine...

Carey- I agree. I tend to shy away from paying for things when I don't have to.

This seems to be a commonly asked question on the web and on AR, but without a definitive answer.

Looks like my Google Alert is working fine.  :)

If you can get placement in the Yahoo Directoy (nothing is comletely guaranteed according to the their terms) then the investment of $300 (25/month) for a link from Yahoo is not a bad one at all.

Can you create similar inbound authority without having to cough up the 300?  Yea, sure.  But it all takes work. and recognition.  This is just a solid investment for something coveted.

I'd have to agree with Jim.

It's a good link. But just ask yourself...can you get similar inbound authority without paying for it?

It is, afterall....all about YEO now.

Thanks Jim and NikNik. (I knew that I am not the only one paying attention to my 'reputation management' around here.)

From what I've read it's unclear what PR value the Yahoo Directory holds or what value Google gives it in it's algorithms.

What I do know, is that seems to be the common factor between the sites that outrank me. I would love some PR 6 and 7 link love, but for my search term, a little YEO might do the trick.

Nik asks "can I get similar inbound authority without paying for it?" I don't know, can I? Know any good edu sites that are giving it away?

Hmm. Thanks for the heads up. I'll investigate. Are there others? Yahoo UK? Yahoo China? Do they have good google-juice? I appreciate your help.

I don't think that they carry the same weight, but I could be wrong. They don't have a high PageRank, but they are probably a well trusted source.

one thing you should do is see if your competition is in there. Also make sure to join DMOZ.org for free. Dont make your description too glowing, or  it will get chopped

So what did you decide?  did you go for the Yahoo link?  I'm debating as well and not sure I want to cough up the $300.

I decided I needed to get my online house in order first. I am in the process of combining my website and my blog into a new Tomato Blogsite. I think that the architecture of the WP design will really help.

But yes, I think I will pay the money to Yahoo. But I also know that it isn't the silver bullet. It is just one tool to help me win a photofinish if there is one.

Hi Geordie - I'd love to know whether you took the Tomato Intensive Blog training? I am such a novice (just started online participation in October(about 60 days ago) I've got the Windermere premium agent site, and a fairly good blog at typepad, but like you, I feel that it's time to get this act together in a more effective way. Is Tomato all you thought it would be and more as far as 'getting your online house in order?'

PS I like the Twitter scene - my friend Rhonda Porter got me started with most of this stuff - do you know The Mortgage Porter? She's created quite an online presence with her passion and commitment to blogging and of course great service. http://www.mortgageporter.com  and http://www.beachdriveblog.com

My partner Allyson and I are still going through the training, so I can't give it a fair shake quite yet.

I consider myself pretty techy and have been blogging for 4 years now. I am not a code monkey, but I think am certainly in the group that thinks that e-PRO is a tin-foil badge. (google that reference if you need to..)

I think the Tomato training is probably amazing for 90% of agents out there. I think it will be helpful to me, but not necessarily life changing. (I'd love to be proven wrong.)

I do think my new blog is going to be incredible and am very glad I am taking the time and the money to make the change.

tweet at ya later
