Great tutorial, Joe!  Graphs are a great way to get boring statistics into graphics that are appealing, interesting and more understandable!

Thanks again!

Joe: Great tutorial and I've been using excel that way but some of things you mentioned will help me make creating charts a bit smoother. Also, for really simple charts, have you heard of google.docs There's a great post by AR member, Jeff Turner about this.

Excel 2007 really has some easy to use features to produce great results. Haven't taken a look at pivot tables yet, and definitely need to work on creating some graph styles. Thanks for the reminder, Joe!

I oversee 7 real estate offices and provide our agents with a broad range of statistics and graphs so I wanted to suggest a great site for making fantastic "totally free" graphs of any data you might put together http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx

You can export in various formats but the most useful is the SVG export option for those of you with Adobe Illustrator experience you will be able to open the SVG in Illustrator and manipulate each and every part of the charts, graphs and data to look exactly as you want it.

I liked your video! I also use the Jing capture tool for video and picutures. It is also free at http://www.jingproject.com. I have posted some similar ideas on my AR blog - but I think I need to upgrade to Excel 2007! I am using 2003 and it doesn't seem to have as many cool tools as your video showed!

Thanks Joe.  One thing about Active Rain, when you have a question someone always manages to write a post with the answer.  I have been admiring market reports with graphs for some time now but haven't know how to do one.  Thanks for filling me in.

7:51pm • #39

What a great post!  I too have bookmarked (Google Bookmarks) it. I was a bog user of snagit for my screen capture needs on my old XP laptop. When I got this Vista laptop I didn't now what to use, but somehow (probably thanks to google again) I discovered that Vista has a built in screen capture program. It is called the "Snipping Tool" and you can fnd it by typing that into Search box insiude the Start menu.

Once again great post Joe!

11:11pm • #40

For Screen Capture I have always just used the "Print Screen" key next to the F12 then click that button then Open Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements or most any other photo edit program.  In you photo edit program click "File" "New" then click "ctrl" and "v" and the screenshot is now pasted into your photo edit program where you can crop, save etc.

Joe, thanks so much for putting together this tutorial. I must say you are definitely comfortable with Excel. I hate it. Anyway, I will get going on this because the graphs look absolutely great. The wow factor I think over other agents when you post this for your area.

I have over 256 dates and it will not let me group them by date. It just says it cannot group for the date field. Any help you can offer? Thanks Patrick Milligan

Joe, What program did you use to create the You Tube video? I thought that was the most amazing part, aside from the valuable info on creating a market graph. It looked like a combination of PowerPoint with embedded videos.

Patrick Milligan - if you cannot group in the Pivot Table - you have a blank somewhere in your data. I have found that if I have any blank cells anywhere in the data - this will cause the error you described. Richard Ferris, AmcAppraisalsinc.com Fl St Cert REA #RD4088

Joe, Really great presentation ... thank you!! MS Excel offers so much, but can be so confusing to figure out. You've just demystified a great feature. Also, thanks for sharing the "Screen hunter" software info. I use to use "Snag It," but I need to reinstall my computer, so I'll give your recommendation a try. Best regards, Mike

Hi Joe - just found this post, and watched your video.  I know nothing about excel and this is a bit over my head at this point.  We can't, not that I know of, download data like you show in this video.  We have to get the data manually and then create charts.  I'd love to be able to know how to create charts from scratch in exel......one day maybe I will.

This is what I was looking for, thanks for your time in putting together the tutorial!  One (unrelated) question - would you mind sharing how you made/where you got the "buttons" at the bottom of your post (with link to your market reports, etc.)  I've googed 'custom buttons', etc but don't see anything.  Thanks!

Thank Kevin. I find that making something in MS Powerpoint and then doing a screen capture to convert it to a .jpg or .gif file is the easiest way to make buttons.

Will do Sharon. I used camtasia (software, no camera required). It does a live screen capture that you can "do and record" at the same time.
