Labels and generalizations are often slapped onto Gen X and Gen Y real estate buyers and sellers. Internet "gurus" and coaches alike dictate the standards by which Gen X and Gen Y buyers and sellers will hop in a real estate agent's pocket. All you need to do is get plugged into social networking and become active in the Re.net and you will have the younger generation's business.

Bzzz ... wrong.

There are no slang terms or pop culture knowledge that is going to make a real estate agent become a trusted advisor. Regardless of the fact that Gen Y was born with a keyboard at their fingertips and Gen X is a "me" generation, it doesn't mean we don't want knowledgeable market professionals. It means we want high-touch, service and attention.

Is that so hard to understand?

Some real estate professionals get it. They use the Internet as a vehicle to generate business and communicate their value proposition. They get away from the lip service "I am the top producer" and prove their knowledge through actual, up-to-date local information. They also answer questions without the propaganda.

Good point -- information means exactly that.    The days of awards are over.

Interesting blog. I'm an Xer and you're right on track. I'm working with my partner who is a boomer to help her understand these things. thanks

Rebecca, I agree!  Eveyone is different and it takes a different tact.  Our children are both Generation Y, our son loves to text message and our daughter can't stand it.  It is all personal and you have relate to each person in a different manner.  I think we sometimes get carried way with those labels. I don't like being lumped as a baby boomer.

Rebecca great blog and greatly agree my business has grown ten folds since I choose to specialize in a group that I identify with and am to relay information to them in the ways that make most sense to them.

I never worry or even spend time on age of clients.  If you think and feel young you can work and get along with anyone. But I sure do run into agents (even a few of my own) that just don't get it.

Rebecca, it all comes down to the nitty gritty. Providing a quality service, producing results, and being compensated for the work. Communication is one of the main keys no matter what generation we are dealing with. Great post.

The social networking sites might get you exposure, but if you cannot prove yourself worthy of someone's business through industry acumen, then that person who found you on facebook, myspace, or wherever will probably move on. We might like our phones bedazzled, but in the end we want our professionals to be clear, knowledgeable, and professional.

Rebecca, I could not agree more. It is not all the hype that I want, it is the knowledge of the area and the experience to get me what I want for the best deal.

I agree that we should not label but as a 50+ baby boomer with 4 "30 and under" team members, we all need to understand each other and communicate the way each person wants us to which means we can be stuck in our ways......Thanks for the post.  I appreciate your insight as we work to better our customer service.

Hi all,

I wanted to pop in and say I appreciate the comments on this post and will pop in this evening to comment on each one more personally.  I am a little swamped with "work ahead" work today:-)

Li- Awards still have a place- self motivation.

Holly- Glad to hear that, I am sure it is confusing with all the mixed signals about our generations.

Marchel- Exactly- is it the same with my family.  Same generations and different preferences.

Heather- Just makes sense:-)

Kim- Knowlege is gonna win out everytime.

Deb- It is soo the nitty gritty- They say the devil is in the details? No, it is success.

Rich- 'nough said.

Danny- Exactly, you can look at listings online all day long or play internet games, but all consumers of all generations need true professionals who are true experts.

Team Honeycutt- I don't disagree- we all need to learn improved communication vehicles, but it is for the longevity and the improved efficiency of the business.

Those labels can serve as helpful benchmarks when trying to understand how and why a group of people may make certain buying decisions, but certainly shouldn't be used when relating to a client directly.

As well,l you make a great point. Being a professional is being a professional and trying to change how you communicate to "relate" to a certain group may come accross as insincere.
