Cheap Domain Names Harder to Find Thanks to Yahoo

Yahoo Domain Name Renewal Sky High!

Yahoo increased the renewal cost of domains to $34.95 effective July 1, 2008. This is a huge increase from the $8.95 to initially register a domain.

Considering the cheap price of domains elsewhere, you have to wonder why Yahoo would make such a move. This is one way fill the coffers quickly at the risk of losing a certain percentage of customers. There are many Mom and Pop businesses who are set up for automatic renewal, may not realize that is a sky high price, or don’t know how to transfer their domain to another registrar. Besides, for those who only have one domain name, it may not seem worth the effort to make the change.

Following up on a rumor that Register.com has raised their prices, I went to their web site and learned they are charging $35 for a new domain name. Back in the day I was a prisoner of Network Solutions when they charged $35 and made it extremely difficult to transfer away to a less expensive registrar. Their price is still no bargain at $34.95 for a one year registration.

I buy (and renew) my domains at GoDaddy for $9.99, using a Dealtaker coupon code which brings them down to $6.95. Since I have over 100 domains registered I need to keep the price as low as possible. GoDaddy also offers privacy, which means my name, address, phone number and email are not displayed in the WhoIs database for the entire world to see.

When looking for domain names, you may want to check out Bustaname and NameBoy. They both offer great tools for finding domain names, and offer good prices on registration through various domain registrars.

Yahoo must not really want to be in that busines!

Wow, talk about a huge price increase. Hopefully this is no indication that the rest of them will be looking for bigger profits.

@Chris - it seems like that at first, but many people don't know much about the Internet, and they'll trust the name and use Yahoo.

@Christine - agreed. I think GoDaddy uses domains names as a leader, then sell hosting and a plethora of other services, and that's where they make their money, not on domain names.

Thanks for the heads up. I have been buying names at Yahoo because it is easy to use and using a masked forward is really simple with Yahoo. Guess I'll have to switch them over to someone more reasonable.

@Geordie - it's really easy to forward a masked domain from GoDaddy, too. Keep in mind when you switch you want to do it ahead of renewal...I forget the number of days.

Wow Kay - one hundred domain addresses! Why so many? Are these all yours or clients of yours?

I also use Godaddy because i have about 30 names. So thanks for the good info. I am doing this right

Yahoo is on the way out as we know it. Its getting beat in the ad markets and is grabbing for straws to boost quyarter over quarter numbers.

I've always used godaddy.com - very easy and reasonable on price. I've never tried the add on's but know many that have with good results.

I bought a couple of those cheap domain names from Yahoo. Can I renew them with GoDaddy and the lower price?

Mike - transfer them to GoDaddy...it's $7.95 or something like that. You have to do it within a certain time period before the renewal date.

The .info domain at godaddy seems to always have a great sale for the first year.

Domains are $8.95 at 1&1.com and I have been phasing out everything at Yahoo and moving it over there. 117 URLs at last count. For Yahoo's sake, I hope they know what they are doing. Whatever happened to inching the pricing up a few bucks? Straight to $34.95 seems like a big stretch.
