What do the associations really mean, and how do you get them?

Ok, I am going to really try to understand this site. I have posted 5 blogs and want to do something creative at the same time make an impact. So far there has been one comment which I was happy about that. I have read several blogs and comments on how to get the most out of this. I am still a little, ok really confused, about associations.  Can someone explain them and the importance.

 

 

                   Everyone is so helpful on this site, can you help me on this .
