As with many things in our lives, some things we control, some we don't! As we go through our daily lives, it is important to take time to for ourselves. I know, there are always demands on our time and attention. I think what has helped me to reduce the stress in my live is to be able to prioritize. It isn't always easy to do but it has allowed me to not only reduce my stress but become more productive. The realization that sudden cardiac arrest can strike nearly anyone has spurred on the desire to reduce my risks that I can control so that I can have a better chance of being around for a long time! Some risk factors that I can control include:

  • Stress
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Smoking
  • Weight
  • High Fat Diet
  • Exercise
  • Drug and/or Alcohol Abuse

There are of course those risk factors that are beyond our control and they include:

  • Diabetes
  • Aging
  • Congenital Heart Disorders
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Previous Heart Attack
  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Family History

The American Red Cross has developed a Cardiac Chain of Survival which consists of a sequence of steps that are activated in response to an emergency. They include early recognition of the situation, early CPR, early defibrillation, and early advanced life support by trained medical professionals. Similar in action to the traditional Automated External Defibrillator is the Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). The implantation of the ICD is often prescribed for patients who have experienced at least one cardiac episode that is not effectively controlled. The ICD delivers electrical therapy to restore normal rate and rhythm to the heart.

While we can't do everything, do what you can to help reduce your risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

Whoa...are you in a dark place today or what?

I just came from my Dr's today and you sound just like her!

Any suggestions on how to reduce stress caused by lack of income?

Great post, Rich! We had quite a scare with my husband on New Year's Day that landed him in the hospital for four days.  Not a heart attack, but a problem with the electrical system that controls the heart.  It was quite scary...I thought I was gonna lose him.

We learned a lot about just the very things you talk about here.

Hopefully, you will reach a lot of folks with this.

Rich, the heart is nothing to play around with. On Sunday I turn 42 and I have seen 1 heart attack and 1 minor stroke. People need to take these things serious.

Rich, I too have seen precious people lost too soon due to an unexpected heart attack.  I believe in people seeing a cardiologist at the age of 40 or earlier if there are any risk factors.  Great information to share.

Joan - It could have been that Deep Frying post <<<smile>>> I hope all went well with the doctor!

Kim - I am glad your husband is alright. That ICD device, from what I read, is meant to control irregularities in the hearts electrical system. I might not exercise as much as I should but I do try to watch my diet and stay somewhat active.

Danny - 42! With those type of past issues you definitely have to stay on top of the controllable risk factors!

Carole - Genetics plays such a large role in our health. I love my family but they have passed on some less than favorable genetic predispositions!
