Fort Myers Beach residents fighting over beach re-nourishment

Fort Myers Beach councilmen are going through another delicate issue: should the beach be re nourished? Should they use the opportunity to get a $10 million dollars fund from the government to help re nourish the beach? The citizens are divided and they have to make a decision before 2010.Otherwise they loose these funds.

      Fort Myers Beach

Beach frontage owners are concerned, and you cannot blame them.If the island goes along the Federal funding, they will have to follow their rules. That may mean that many owners may loose some land, that is, the town will then own any re-nourished part of the beach even if its on someone property. Perhaps it is more of a fear then an actually fact but I have talked to quite a few beach property owners and they do believe they will loose some land towards the shore line.FMB Gulf Of Mexico

Some believe, and they are not property beach owners that a Fort Myers Beach re-nourishmentis due. Both have complete different views: One thinks that the beach is loosing grounds and the other thinks that the beach has gained ground. Its amazing how one can change geological data when it serves your purpose. I think it should be done and yes they should add dunes and beach vegetation to slow down the erosion, but I am not a beach frontage owner. I think I would vote for it anyway. If it protects your home and you can't build within a certain amount of feet from the shore line anyway, it might be the right price to pay. Beautify the beach and protect its homes is the way to go. But, lets be real here, they should then have their property re-assessed and pay less taxes accordingly to the loss of land.

I've never heard of beach re-nourishment.  It sounds like a complex issue.

LLoyd,

If I owned a home on the beach, I would always be in favor or re-nourishment. The consequences are having a home IN the surf if the beach continues to erode. At that point, the homes value erodes too.

I, too, have never heard of this. Of course, Arizona isn't really geared to beach property. ;-)  It sounds like it would be something beneficial though. ;-)

Sean: you nailed it.

Mesa: Its quite common in southwest Florida.Naples went through it in the late 90's. They suck the sand from miles away with huge flexible pipes and bring it back to the shores. Its then a feast of sea shells but it takes a few years for the sand to become fine again. Looks pretty good now.

Meridian: it is complex but mostly very expensive. We do need to protect our beaches though.
