I'm going green....er ok maybe not all the way green - but I have at least started. With the recent purchase of my first home, and moving day approaching, I had the fun task of getting all the utilities hooked up. Since Texas is now deregulated you have several choices of power companies to choose from. My first inclination was just to find the cheapest and go with that, but remembered a promise I made to myself recently about being "green" and helping the nation kick it's oil addiction.

So I chose "Wind Powered Electricity", a 100% renewable resource, which had suprisingly one of the cheapest rates out there. You might be thinking "Big deal, thats nothing", well did you know that even with the affordable rates only 2% of the population chooses renewable energy? One household using renewable energy is equal to taking an automobile off the road that drives 20k miles a year on our roads. Imagine if 50% or even 80%  of the population took advantage of this energy source!

I would like to hear about what you are doing to help the environment, and how you incorporate it into your business as a REALTOR. I would love to be able to offer information and products to my clients about being "green'.

Have a great day!

Dear Kenzie,

You are very lucky to live in a place that provides options. Texas maybe deregulated, but not all communities have power options. My neighborhood only has one service provider and its the infamous PEC (Pedernales Electric Co-Op). They are the ones paying the folks that sit on the board over $200K for part-time jobs with full paid benefits. So of course those costs are trickled down to the consumers. Consider your self LUCKY!!!

Kenzie - I respect your choice of Electric.  We are in a smaller market where there is only one provider for electric and natural gas.

I have certainly been there, this is actually the first time that I have had a choice of providers - usually it was just one company that serviced that area - high prices or not!

Electricity is only one small piece of the puzzle however, I would like to hear about anything that fellow Agents are doing, whether it be recycling, carpooling, planting veggie gardens etc....

Kenzie, we don't have any options with regards to utilities in Louisville.  I've done a lot of little things to my home such as replace all the lights with CFLS, seal the HVAC, insulate water pipes, etc.  Most don't take very long, but do make a difference in the utility bills.

Good for you! I admire your resolve to make the world a better place!

Have a great week!
