Retirement: Finally pursuing your favorite hobbies.

“I LOVE the life after 55!”

This seems to be the catch phrase here amongst retirees in Central Florida. The reasons for loving retirement seem to cover a lot of areas, including waking up at anytime, not answering to anybody, and most importantly, taking up new hobbies.

Hobbies are so important for active adults; good for brain stimulation and blow flow. And, aside from the physical benefits of hobbies, I have realized that they tend to bring out the hidden talents in people.

Recently, I observed some of my friends at Lake Ashton’s clubhouse, and I noticed that some of the hobbies they have taken up have brought out their natural gifts. Active adults that used to work as accountants are finding that they are exceptional bingo players. Others that used to work in Hospitality Management are using their excellent communication skills to play Charades and other group games.

I am discovering newer hobbies every moment spent with my new, retired friends. I have a list of hobbies that I would like to dab into now that I am retired, and as it keeps growing, my interest is peaking. Here is what I have so far:

Bowling – This hobby dates back to 1909 and continues to be a favorite amongst active adults. Requiring excellent aim and strength, bowling is definitely a sport that you can get better at with practice. I see residents at Lake Ashton’s 4 lane bowling center raise their bowling average dramatically since their retirement.

Scrapbooking – This is the new trend among senior citizens. I love looking at pictures of me or my children and thinking of the color patterns and captions that would go great with the pictures. I wish our parents had the tools that we have available now to create such beautiful and sentimental works of art.

Water aerobics – This is a somewhat modern activity based on strength training without the body straining. Each of our Central Florida retirement communities has a pool in which residents enjoy water aerobics. It is perfect for us because it builds lower-body strength, and the more lower-body strength one acquires, the more flexible they can become.

Writing movie reviews – This is a new one, but I hear a lot about this fun activity from residents of our many retirement communities. Now that seniors don’t have to spend the whole day in the office, they are making use of our surround sound theatres and watching as many shows as they want! The most fun part is writing reviews and reading the reviews of others.

Do you have hobbies to add to my list? Are there activities that you have tried during leisure time that you would like to recommend? For inspiration, we invite you to peruse our website www.crfcommunities.com. Besides fitness centers and community events, we are always looking to tap into the lives of retirees to bring the most optimal amenities and tools used for living retirement life to the fullest.
