I heard the sad news today that Estelle Getty died around 5:30 a.m. this morning at her Hollywood Boulevard home in Los Angeles. She was 84.

Estelle Getty played Sophia Petrillo on TV's "The Golden Girls" for which she won an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award.

"The Golden Girls", all four of them (Blanche, Dorothy, Rose & Sophia) were brilliant. Their chemistry and timing was superb.

Blanche:I treat my body like a temple.
Sophia: Yeah, open to everyone, day or night

Stan: Hello Sophia, you're looking younger every day.
Sophia: Hi Stan, and that's a beautiful toupee you're wearing. Great, now we're both liars.

Sophia: Blanche, a terrible thing has happened to you. But when life does something like this, there are a couple of things you got to remember. You got your health, right?
Blanche: Yeah.
Sophia: You can still walk, can't you?
Blanche: That's true.
Sophia: Great, go get me a glass of water.

Sophia: Picture it... Sicily.

Estelle Getty will always be the nicest "mean little lady" - and I thank her for the many nights of laughter she brought to her many fans.

That was a great show. It was awful what she had become in the last couple of years.

Oh, what a blast from the past.  I used to watch those shows as a jr. higher maybe.  They were fantastic & Estelle was hilarious.  She'll be missed.

She was very funny.  Too bad. A least she lived a long full life.

Hi Stewart... This is very sad news.  Estelle was a WONDERFUL person.  I have always been a big Golden Girls fan, so when Estelle volunteered her time to entertain at a conference that I was co-chair of, the chance to meet her was one of the genuine thrills and pleasures of my life.  She was a great talent and a great humanitarian, but most of all, she will be greatly missed.

Steve - I agree with you - she was a great talent and she will be missed.

I read she did great work in fundraising for AIDS research.

She's gone, but her legacy lives on.  Here's to Estelle/Sophia for showing us you can be spunky and feisty until the end.

Stewart..I hear about her passing this afternoon.   I think that without Estelle being on the show, it would not have made it for as long as it did.

I miss watching her with my mum and my daughters. We would all sit around and for some reason my girls really liked to see their grandmother laugh out loud while she watched this show about the ladies.

Stewart, this is a nice tribute.  A friend called me to tell me.  We read the Janet Evanovich books and Estelle Getty would have been perfect in the role of the Grandma who is a zany and outspoken out lady.  She will be missed.

I used to enjoy that show a lot. I think this show really made older people seem more real and accessible.

Loved the show.  It was one of my favorites - sadly, today's programming doesn't compare...
