As for Arizona's standings...
28. Gilbert, AZ
Top 100 rank: 28
Population: 191,500
In the early 1900s, Gilbert was known as the Hay Capital of the World. Today it is a bustling small city and the fastest-growing town in Arizona in the last decade.
New development projects include the Freestone Recreation Center, a new regional mall called SanTan Village, and a planned Mormon temple.
Retaining the charm of the old days, the town's Heritage District remains a quaint and historic heart of the community. And the schools are top notch.
30. Chandler, AZ
Top 100 rank: 30
Population: 240,500
Today, technology has a major presence by computer chip maker Intel. And the second largest mall in the Phoenix area -- the 180+ stores in the Chandler Fashion Center -- is a shopper's paradise.

47. Scottsdale, AZ
Top 100 rank: 47
Population: 231,100
The epitome of an upscale shopping destination the New York Times described its downtown as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" with "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene."
Scottsdale has plenty to offer. If you love golf, this is the place. The town is home to the FBR Open Golf Tournament, the best-attended event on the PGA Tour.
As you might imagine, Scottsdale isn't cheap. But the cost of housing, similar to other Phoenix-area towns, has declined from the market peak.
55. Peoria, AZ
Top 100 rank: 55
Population: 142,000
You can feel Peoria's historic ties to Phoenix by walking its streets, which are aligned by a common grid system.
Sports are a big draw here: Peoria is the spring training home of the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners baseball teams, which share the Peoria Sports Complex. There's been lots of development lately, including the 280-seat Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, which opened last year.
But the city has also set aside more than 750 acres of open space for preservation and recreation, a good thing for nature-loving residents.
