I'm rarely late to a closing. But nothing is perfect, and no one is perfect. On those occasions when I am late, it's because of circumstances that are beyond my control.
One of the main culprits is late documents. It's a fact of life. It's something you learn to deal with.
Another reason is traffic. I always allow an extra 10 minutes -- sometimes more -- to compensate for things like rush hour, detours, etc. But there are some traffic situations that you cannot compensate for.
I had a closing yesterday afternoon in Pueblo. About 2 miles after getting on I-25 I had to come to a stop. For as far as you could see, there was bumper-to-bumper traffic.
The first thing I did was call the borrower and let him know that I was stuck in traffic, and that I would be late. After that, all I could do was wait it out.
I turned on the radio to try to find out what was going on. I figured that there was an accident. There was. But it must have been pretty bad because the highway had to be closed, according to the report I heard on the radio. I called the borrower again, just to let him know that I hadn't abandoned him, and that I would be there.
About an hour later I was rolling again, and I made it to the closing. The borrower was understanding. There was really nothing that could be done to get there any sooner. All you can do is call the borrower and provide as much information as possible.
Then be patient.
Good luck.
