Rock Hill SC Great Day Trip
Landsford Canal State Park
If you live near Rock Hill SC or around the Charlotte NC Metro area and you would like to take a day trip and see some beautiful sites, here's a suggestion. Landsford Canal in Catawba, SC just outside of Rock Hill, SC and the park is pet friendly. Easy to get to, I-77 to exit 77 and go east for about 15 to 20 minutes and the Landsford Canal entrance is on the left. I am very fortunate to live about 5 minutes from the canal and can go over when I have a little time to kill...and if I can drag my husband away from the house. When we are very adventuresome and I mean very, we will take all 5 of our dogs. Usually we take the 2 young kids which are fairly easy to handle especially when we do not have our ex-racing greyhound with us who walks like a drunk on a leash. The park area is really pretty with an old log cabin, picnic and cookout pit areas, kids playground, trail hiking and fishing. Landsford Canal is the last of a dozen 19th century South Carolina river canals, and has all of its major features intact. Trails follow the canal and the river. This is a good place to see transportation history. It also makes a nice scenic hike for those who prefer flat trails, rather than mountainous ones. Canoe access to the Catawba River is available at a drop off area. If you are VERY LUCKY and I have not been lucky YET you may see the Bald Eagles flying around, halfway down the trail there is a place where you can actually see their nest...it's HUGE. A really great time to go is from mid-May to mid-June, you can see the world's largest population of the Rocky Shoals spider lilies here and they are gorgeous! Of course pets are allowed but must be on leash.
