Fire

I'm writing this at 7 am this morning but the story really starts around 4 am. I'm not sure what woke me around 4 am but I could not help but notice that it was non-stop lightning, little or faint thunder. I layed half awake for the next hour until I got up and put the dog out and much to my amazement there was no rain yet the lightning was still non-stop and the lightning buy this time was getting loud. Then there was a BIG one, big enough to scare my 8 year old out of her bedroom and knocking on our door. Now it was pouring cat's and dog's. I assured Tina that everything was OK and it's alright to be scared, this was a potentially dangerous storm. We looked out the front door and the street was absolutely full of water, much needed water as of late. A few minutes later we heard the sirens of the fire trucks, sounded like they stopped near by. A few minutes latter I could smell smoke, the smell that you know is from a building that was on fire. About 1/2 hour later I told my bride "that fire must have been nearby, I smell smoke and the sirens sounded like they stopped near by". I looked out back and much to my surprise they they were, 4 fire trucks and a whole lot of fire fighters. Fortunately for us it was the neighbors yard shed that was up in flames. Fortunately for everyone it was not close enough to any other building to set them on fire. Unfortunately for the neighbors and the fire fighters this was were they kept there gardening equipment and the petroleum products needed for their tiller and mower.

30 feet from my property is close enough for me that I think I will review my homeowners insurance needs. It's also a good reminder as to tell my potential first time home owners why they need home owners insurance.

This is also (not planned) a good opportunity for me to welcome my friend Kellie Thorman of State Farm Insurance to Active Rain. Kellie is a new member who recently accepted my invitation here. Thanks Kellie I look forward to your posts!

Ps The Keep Out sign has been there for years (I didn't say they were friendly neighbors).

These storms always seem to come at night. It makes it hard to see and adds to the worry. Here in the mountains we have them too. # houses in my community were hit by lightening this year. I guess it is the price we pay for living in country areas. Glad to know everyone is ok. Take a nap later today  !!!

Bob - A little too close for comfort.  Glad that you and your family are safe.  It could have been worse.....glad it was only the neighbors shed and not their house!  Good luck.
