Maintaining
clean drains can go a long way towards keeping your home sanitary and
saving
yourself all the headaches that go along with cleaning a blocked drain!
The
foremost rule of clean drains is to be careful what you put down them.
Most
blockages are a result of foreign material in the drain. Drains can get
affected if detergents and fats have been allowed to accumulate or if
cement or
grout has been poured down them.
Regular
cleaning can usually prevent frequent blockages. Drains associated with
sinks,
showers and baths can be cleaned out with a proprietary drain cleaner
and hot
water. However follow the instructions carefully to avoid causing
damage.
Putting
caustic soda in your drains every two months or so is helpful and
usually
ensures that your drain never gets blocked. The trusty rubber plunger
is also a
handy tool and is most effective when used immediately after cleaning
the drain
out with hot water and caustic soda which loosens up the blockages.
If
all else fails you can resort to professional help. This is the
preferred
option when your drain is being blocked by roots, if the pipes have
been
installed incorrectly or when your entire piping system is on the verge
of
collapse!
