There are so many people discussing Green solutions in building a home, that I thought I would show you a green solution for heating your pool...

We are using Solar to heat our pool (and this is not an expensive solar system).

We are just using a simple Solar Cover... Look at these results:

Charlottesville Pool  Charlottesville Pool

Outdoor temperature is 82 degrees and the pool temperature is 91 degrees!!!

Wow, that is hot! It is actually a little to hot for me to swim but my wife loves it!
I learned a long time ago that making my wife happy makes me happy!

Here is the simple cover we use:

And here is a close up of the cover, we just roll it across the pool and unroll it when we swim
(actually we lets the kids do it)

Now I like a simple solution that is cost effective!

(Might be worth mentioning to your friends)

Nice idea!  I hadn't heard of one of these before, but it makes perfect sense since the pool is usually in the sun all day anyway.

We had a solar cover on our pool here in NOVA for years.  When I lived in AZ we had to use airetors at night to COOL down the pool.  Though when it is 115 degrees outside even a 91 degree pool feels good :-)

Your pool looks extremely inviting -- we use this same system on our pool.

Charles, what an innovative idea for warmth in the pool. I like all the trees around as well.

It is quite common here in Michigan to use solar covers and we need the heat in the pools a bit more than you do. Thanks for the story.

Charles, I use a wrap like this to cover my green house during the winter months to save on energy...

People here usually just cover their pools if they are going away or a dust storm is coming - our average year round water temp is 76 degrees.  If I had a pool like yours, I would get a waterproof laptop and be in it all of the time - beautiful woodsy setting, too.

Charles, I had always heard that pool covers were difficult to work with. Do you find this one pretty easy to "roll out" and "roll in" ? It does look like a great idea either way. I am assuming that it couldn't be to difficult based on the presumptive ages of your kids.

Hi Charles,

I love the pool idea. It reminds me of when I was a child. My dad hooked up a, more primitive, home made solar heating system to our pool. It was made or black plastic tubing attached to plywood, set on an angle to catch the sun. The cool water went in one side and was pushed back out into the pool on the other side after it had been warmed by the sun inside the black tubing. It worked great!

I think someone should invent a pool cover that is also a magnifier so the sun will heat the pool without solar panels.

Hey Charles "making your wife happy makes you happy" - You sure are a smart man :) LOL

You see those everywhere down here - they make great winter covers for the couple of months we don't use the pool!

Hi Charles...Do you know how large they make these?

I need one for the lake in my backyard.  It is just over 13,000 acres.

Hi Charles...How about from October until May or June?

I live on the main lake fairly close to the dam and it can get downright chilly (make that cold) much of the year.
