We all started out with these computers as early as Kindergarten.

The #2 was our choice and yellow was the color.

They were affordable and a necessity to make it through school.

All mathematicians were encouraged to use them.

The negative was, we could poke our eyes out.

Break downs didn't mean we had to ship them off to a specialist, we simply asked Mom to go to the 5&10 store and pick up another.

They could be thrown away with no loss of information.

If someone would steal it, bummer, but they didn't get all our of personal information.

You could chew on them and not worry about electrocution.

The cost was less then a nickle.

The delete button was simple to use, we turned it upside down. Can't do that with the computers of today.

When we moved up in the world we went to the Pen, than White Out.

How things have changed, I can't recall the last time I used the original computer.

Thank goodness some times for technology, until we have a break down or the Internet is moving slow. Gosh, to think about it, I think were being controlled by these things!

Duane - I guess I am still backwards at times.  I use a pencil and scribble all over whatever is in front of me - closing statement, listing presentation, back of electric bill, etc.

Things sure were alot simpler those days.  I really like technology and would hate to give it up.  That is, until my computer crashes...  :)

I am a techie.  I can code, photoshop and create databases from scratch. And I have several, several pencils in my purse, at the office, at home, in my car.  I have yellow ones, ones with The Debbie Reed Team logo on them, ones with hearts and quite a few I snag while I am at tradeshows.  I have 3 electric pencil sharpeners, a few hand held ones and the skill to sharpen one with a knife.  I really like pencils.

Duane,

I still love the original computer...in fact, for years I used one for all my 'original' HUD-1 settlement sheets...!!! Thanks,   Fran

hahahaha! Got a laugh from this post! Thanks a lot.

Back when I was just starting to work, I was a Directory Assistance operator for the phone company. Guess what our "high tech" tools were?

A #2 pencil with the eraser to flip pages with...and a telephone book! We've come a long way, baby!

That's cute, Duane! I still also have my Selectric II typewriter (and use it).  People come in and look at it in wonder.  Probably wondering if it still works, which it does.  I also stock up during school shopping time on Legal Jr. notepads because I absolutely LOVE taking notes!  I have to write it down or it is goooooooone!

Duane, Were would we be without computers today?

3:43am • #16

I think the original computer is part of the thing that holds the pencil (brain), and the pencil was the "screen".

Morning Duane,

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Gosh, we have advanced, or have we!

I still use the writing stick and then there are those days that I use the eraser even more.

Gary, isn't that the truth. The only thing, we didn't need these big bags to carry our pencils that we need with these things.

6:26am • #23

You didn't need a special backpack for pencil "computer" - have you SEEN those new things in the store lately for kids to carry even more weight on their backs? Going back to school, my foot! Between the books, backpacks and computers, it should say going back to the Chiropractor! haha

Anybody on here admitting to putting their old fashioned "computer" pencils in a pocket protector? LOL!

Here's one of our cards I thought was really funny - hope it makes you laugh too!:

Duane sometime the computer is very frustrating as mine just crashed for the 2nd time this year.  It was very old in computer years and I had to replace it this week.  I still like it better than the original as my handwriting was so bad I had to use the delete button more than I use the backup button on my computer

I write with pencils all the time.  It's a like a break from the real world.

I'm one of the few in my office who still use WinForms as little as possible.  There is something about writing and have to press hard enough to make three copies.

There is something to be said for a #2 pencil.  On the other hand, I type much faster and more neatly than I can write, and since I'm left handed, I don't get that smear down the side of my hand : )

Hi Duane, Thank You for your creative post!  It's true - our faster and more culture is on a frantic trip to who knows where?  I do remember the simple pencil in school.  Thank you for reminding us how to gain perspective.  I have missed many of your posts the past few days due to my proposal for my research project in my doctoral work.  July 30 is my deadline.  Then I must write one chapter by September1, another by October 1 and so on until February 1.  I feel like I am climbing Mount Everest without an oxygen mask so I need to get some oxygen (and water from The Rain) from you and other AR members!
