Have you ever said when moving -- "Why didn't I plan this out better?" If you haven't, I am sure your clients have a time or two. People are always underestimating how much time and work it takes to move -- and I am as guilty as the next person.

Below is a quick little schedule layout. It is not an exhaustive list, but should help get you going. Just add to it. If you want it in an excel format, just email me and I will send it to you. I also have a Quick Reference Moving Budget

Keep in mind the best way to save time is to hire moving helpers to pack, unpack, load and unload your rental moving truck. Did you know our average customer at movinghelp.com gets load and/or unload services for a total price of under $199? How long will it take you or your clients to load and/or unload a moving truck? Would it be worth it to have someone else do it for under $199?

Thanks for the list - and I can email it!  I think $199 is money very well spent.

Virginia - I am glad you feel that way. I even think realtors can offer a great deal to their clients -- realtors pay the $200 and give moving labor services to their client. Take the headache out of the move.

Kevin - we have a retirement/2nd home market here - most of our clients are older and this type of service would make a big difference!

Virginia - Great. I have fliers and business cards that are specifically for the senior adults -- actually, the assisted living communities.

Kevin - can you email them to me if you work this area?  Maybe I should start a business like that if you don't!

Very good list... one thing I would add is to not rely to heavily on the expected closing date. For instance- a Friday closing may mean a Monday key release. Or... sometimes there are instances where documents just can't make it to every stage before close.

You mean you're not supposed to do it all that day????  Wow, what a concept!  ; )

Amen to what Chuck says.  I tell clients that a closing date is a little like a due date for a pregnancy~Moving may not happen exactly on that day.

Pam - I am with you on the analogy of moving being like a pregnancy. I wanted to use the following marketing slogans -- "Moving Help - We take the labor out of moving." Or "Moving Help - the Epidural for moving labor pains." (Oh, yeah, there is a post coming out with that one.)

Great list Kevin! Next time I move I know who to call.......do you load black plastic bags because I generally move in 1 day. On second though maybe with this great list I'll actually get boxes next time. :) Thanks again Kevin!

Good information. It is always good to have check lists so as not to forget to do important things.

Gita - I have long come to realize that if I don't write stuff down -- it is gone. I blame a poor memory on the trauma of past bad relationships -- defense mechanism. :)

Nice list, Kevin!  Having just moved this past weekend, I can say that even when planning ahead, little things come up, so taking care of the bigger things in advance with checklists makes those unexpected things less of a challenge.

I would add that one should also make sure they have important files (titles, insurance policies, medical records, etc.) with them when they move.  These should never be packed on a moving truck, where they would be hard to find if they are suddenly needed.

Also, make sure everyone has any prescriptions, etc. they will need during the move and immediately following.  These items are too important to pack away.

Last one is a fun one. For an in-town move, pre-order food to be delivered or that you can pick up at the end of the day when you are done.  This gives you something to look forward to and takes away the question of "what's for dinner?" from family members.  Keeping a nice bottle of wine out and some beer in a cooler also makes for a more relaxing first night.

Thanks for your post, and for your "tweets".  I enjoy reading them.  =)
