Real Estate or Bust

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with St.Cloud Homes

Are You Breast Dressed or Best Dressed in the office? You want to be perceived as a "professional" not a "pro".  Is your client distracted? Not making eye contact?  Focused on the "wrong" thing instead of getting the close, it may be your clothes costing you the sale. Packaging yourself as a professional doesn't mean dowdy, it means smart, crisp, and polished.

What we are selling is REAL ESTATE knowledge, not sex in the city. The market may be a bust, but not literally. Sales may have been a little "flat" lately but there are better ways to get noticed. Do you use your expertise or are you an expert tease?

Our wardrobe should not alienate our clients. 52% of buyers are couples. 18% are professional women. That leaves 30%. Presenting ourselves in manner conducive to good decision making is part of the sales game.

A Sex Crazed Monkey, a Spinster and a Bank Teller is....  We deal with three components of personality. The Id, Ego and Superego. Id is the sex crazed monkey..I want it, I want it, I want it. The Ego is the spinster trying to control the Id, and the super ego is the bank teller enforcing the rules

Is Image Everything? You Bet Your Success It Is! Dressing for success has its merits. It doesn't always mean ultra conservative, but it is how we present ourselves to the world. You need to fit in and not alienate "the significant other". SHE may be the one who holds the pen and the checkbook. How many times has someone in your office been a little under dressed or just ran in the from the gym while you were sitting there with a client?

We are selling ourselves to a point-but most importantly we are selling Real Estate!

So who is controlling your Wardrobe choices? The Sex crazed Monkey, the spinster or the bank teller?

Allison, Love the photo, but I do not think I will be wearing anything close to that anytime soon!

I dress casual when I feel it is the right atmosphere, and I will put on the suit and tie when need be, I never meet clients in shorts and sneekers,I am always dressed for success, sometimes i might attend an inspection less dressed, but generally always at my best, as far as the other, do I think it is appropriate to dress riske'?.....no, but in Florida females in this business do tend to over do it, and use it as a tool, sex sells! or does it?

As much as i would like,it gets very hot here, so at times it is tough to get in the monkey suit, the female gender tends to lighten the load because they can get away with wearing certain clothing, while men do not have as much to choose from.

Allison,

Excellent post.  I was tearing up from laughing so hard.  Want to know something funnier???  I used to work for a broker that "suggested" I use my assets to get further in this business.

Great post Allison.  At least I think it was.  I was too distracted by the picture to process what you were trying to say.  But I'm sure that it was really on the money.

I remember in the first mortgage company I worked for a new broker came on the scene and was very poorly dressed... not only was it unprofessional but didn't fit her body well...

she immediately walked into a reputation I'm sure she did not want.

Someone surely said something because after that I don't remember so much skin showing after the first week

Allison,

Sorry, but for some reason I can't see anything after the first picture.  I'm sure based on your other blogs you had some funny, thought-provoking, insightful commentary.  Perhaps next time something will show up for me to read!   :-)

PS: I really do only read the blog for the articles!

Nice post!  Sex sells!  So why wouldn't a woman that can tastefully, add a touch of sex appeal, act in a true business like manner NOT do it? Let's face it. You need every advantage in this business. Woman have this advantage over men and they use it all the time.

I went to a Broker Open House  luncheon in my home town. Agent that listed the property was from another brokerage 12 miles from the listing so it wasn't like she couldn't work the listing and I had a client that fit the house. I stopped in.

Here was a very attractive woman from the go, manicured from head to toe, designer business attire, she was wearing a very nice outfit that complimented her figure and she just presented herself very well and had sex appeal. She served a very nice lunch, the house was dressed for success and I had the feeling that I would like to work with her and sell this house!

She wasn't a bust nor did she come across as flat either! Her warbrode was perfect and she conducted her personal presentation as a business decision in my opinion. The listing lasted 3 weeks and sold very close to asking.

The woman that can do this day in and day out create a successful imagine and the sex appeal is just the frosting on the cake!

Allison,

I was just thinking about this very issue today as I walked by a co-worker (agent) dressed in a jogging suit and tennis shoes.  I figured she was just stopping by to grab something really quick, at least I hope so.  There is a limit to dressing down.

Great Post Allison.  I've had an agent in my office who played the sex thing perfectly.  She was a good looking young woman and didn't mind dressing the part.  Men would fawn all over her, but she had a talent of being able to connect with the wifes and girlfriends.  I'm sure that she got burned on occasion because of her sexiness, but I think that over-all it was a money maker for her.

I had another agent with me for a bit who was only 22 years old and absolutely gorgeous.  She did all the right things to get going, but was having no luck.  I convinced her to tone the outfits down and to dress more

 Tramp Stamp

like a librarian and when she did, people took her a lot more seriously.

On the front end of things... I think agents that dress provocatively are only hurting themselves. Very funny post.

Great post!  I loved all of the comments.  What about the women that try to dress like they did when they were 21 and now they're 50 and everything doesn't quite look like it used too?!!!!

Unfortunately, image IS everything.  When you are in a sales position, you are selling YOURSELF first.  I know many agents who are lucky to find the office in the morning, but despite this, they are very good at selling themselves and enjoy very lucrative careers.

Selling yourself involves much more than how you look.  What is even more important is what comes out of your mouth.  You can look as good as it gets, but when you open your mouth you undo everything before that.   Focus on furthering your education and let your thoughts and words blaze the path for you.

It will result in a business that is virtually on automatic...
