Hard Times Call for Back to the Basic Ideas!

I am sure my mother would never believe her eyes, me canning beans!!!  Well the prices of food has put us back to nature.  We deiced it was time to can for the winter and  freeze corn and fruits.  We wrote this off several years ago during the Hurricanes when we lost everything in the freezer,  but we have a generator and my family loves fresh vegetables so I am 46 quarts up on beans and we picked blueberries tonight. We went out and picked the vegetables and set for 3 hours snapping beans, but my family had a ball.  The kids  loved sitting around talking and breaking beans and loved it tonight picking blueberries.  So we have decide to do some more, I will not have to worry about what is  for supper!!   Hard times means the family needs to work together and we really did not mind the work.  It does make you feel good about preparing for winter, and working togeather!

Good for you Kathy. I thought your post was going to be about going back to basics for Real Estate ... which is also necessary at this time. Canning, though ... brings me back to being a boy watching my Mom can everything. My family has been living in the boonies for about six years here in Hawaii where we grow all year long. We have had an abundance of a few things and suggested canning to my wife, who in turn said what is canning? LOL!!

I remember doing the same thing as a child. Now that I have a family of my own, I have been growing a garden and freezing corn, canning beans, and picking blackberries to make jelly and freeze some of the them to make cobblers later. It is a great way to find out what the interests of the kids are. We haven't went through any hurricanes but we have gone through a couple of tornados, and the canning really comes in handy.
