Hatteras Island

If you are planning a vacation on Hatteras Island this summer then leave the fireworks at home. After numerous protests from residents about the careless use of fireworks on Hatteras Island the Dare County board of commissioners banned the sale and use of all types of fireworks on Hatteras Island.

The sale and use of fireworks that explode, such as firecrackers, or fireworks that project up more than 14 feet, such as bottle rockets and skyrockets, have always been illegal in the state of North Carolina. The law was recently relaxed to allow sparkler type fireworks, but those are now also banned in Hatteras. Hatteras Island is not the first area on the Outer Banks to ban all types of fireworks.

When Duck became a town one of the first things they did was to outlaw the sale and use of all types of fireworks. The careless use of fireworks has caused a proliferation in brush fires during the summer tourist season so expect to see more towns start to follow suit and start banning fireworks.
