Tonight, in preparation for the release of
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, I decided to take in
The Mummy just so I could get in the mood for it again. If you are like me and have not seen these for some time, I recommend getting it off the shelf and watching it all over for a refresher.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz star in this fantasy thriller about a mummy that was ressurected in 1923. Evelyn Carnahan, played by Weisz is an English librarian who became interested in starting an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Hamunaptra. Rick O'Connell, who was serving as a captain in the French Foreign Legion, has been imprisoned and makes a deal with Evelyn to take her and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah) to the city of Hamunaptra in exchange for Evelyn striking a deal with the warden to keep Rick from being hanged.
Shortly after reaching Hamunaptra, both groups are attacked by the Medjai, led by Ardeth Bey, who warns them of the evil buried in the city. instead of heading the warning, they continue to excuvate the land and lo and behold they unless the undead mummy. The Medjai is descendants of Seti's palace guards given the task of gaurding the tomb so that no one ever uncovers it. I believe they failed.
Now, lets get back to the mummy. He is no other than High priest Imhotep from 1290 BC. Egypt where he killed Pharaoh Seti because he found out about the affair taking place between his mistress Anck-su-namun and Imhoptep. Instead of facing the guards, Anck-su-namun takes her own life. Imhotep breaks into her crypt and steals her corpse and along with his priest take the body to the city of Hamunaptra to begin the ressurrection ceremony. However, Seti's gaurds find them before it can be complete and force Imhotep to endure the the curse of Hom Dai. They cut his tongue out and wrap him as a mummy and seal him in his tomb with flesh eating scarabs. This ritual is meant to keep him alive for eternity so that he can experience the pain daily.
All this is in the first 20 to 25 minutes of the movie, believe it or not. Once Imhotep is set free he starts gaining strent and his one sole purpose is to resurrect his beloved Anck-su-namun. And he does not care who he kills in the process.

I was enthralled as a kid by the "Egyptian curse" themed movies. I saw this one quite awhile back and really enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing the new one too!
