I HATE SPAM

I hate it because I receive more than my share of the obnoxious stuff, it really hate it because it wastes too much valuable time.  A little background before I continue might be helpful - my website is with Point2Agent and to make a long story short, I use their POP3 for my email. If I apply even the smallest filter against spam I end up not receiving important email which means nothing gets filtered. I receive several hundred spam emails a day, it's making me crazy!!!

A year or so ago, while looking for a solution I came across www.mailwasher.net. I tried the program but had a hard time getting it to work seamlessly with my mail program - so I uninstalled it.  Well.... since I still have so much spam I went looking again and found MailWasher was still around and decided to give it another go.  I'm not sure if a larger company bought them out, but the program is working quite well now.  The learning curve for the consumer is very slight plus there's a built-in learning curve to teach the program what you consider spam.  It's all in your control within the settings.  What I really like about it, is the bounce feature which allows you to determine which emails get bounced back to the offender.  This creates the appearance of your email address being invalid - it that cool or what!!!  I call it

Here's a screenshot of how mail is deciphered within their table:

MailWasher screenshot

MailWasher opens in another window so all the sorting is happening prior to any junk making it to your inbox.  The choices are all yours.  I've only been using it for a few days, but would say it's picking up about 70% of spam.  The other 30% seems to slip through but I think it's because of using Point2 for my POP3.  I'm using the free version for now but will probably buy the paid program.  It's not expensive at $39.95.  I looked for a coupon code and came up with this Promotional Code SDFTHGJ to save $10 (US) on MailWasher Pro!!  I'm not sure it's still good, but can't hurt to try.  They also give a money back guarantee so you can always return to the free version.  I sincerely hope this helps a lot of others out there who are being so disrupted by the hated stuff.  Let me know how it goes.  Also if you have something you're using and are happy with it, please post it here.  That goes for POP3 ideas as well.  I'm not terribly sensitive to a little hijacking.  Rather I encourage some lively give and take :-)

Travis, Steve, Bill, Jean - thank you for your comments.  One thing I forgot to mention is that once you train the program to recognize your spam, and it's been deleted and bounced back to the sender, that same spam will NOT reappear in your list.  Once blacklisted, always blacklisted.  I do notice that with all the flyers that are being sent out, the process takes more time, but even that is working well.  Not trying to offend anyone but I really don't want to see 50-75 out of state real estate flyers in my box every day!!! I'm a VERY happy camper :-)

Thank you for your post!  This sounds like a great program.. and I do like the "bounce" feature.   It does sound appealing to have the "spammers" get "spammed."  Just think if everyone used it  lol.  Fill up their mailboxes like they fill up ours.  Thanks, again.. I'll check it out.

Jean, you're welcome - I always try to reciprocate with a comment to the other person's blog.

Duane, it's better than interesting - IT'S REALLY WORKING - I'm bordering on ecstacy here.  Gosh, it might even get boring with no email to wrestle with - just kidding!!!

Dan, let us know what you think when you've had it a few days.  I think I'm into day 5 and my spam has been cut by about 80% - it's incredible!!!

Kathy - You're welcome, I can't believe how in 6 days the spam went from a storm to a mere drizzle.  I'm still shaking my head in amazement....it's all good...even the icon which lets you know you've got mail to process, it scrubs the envelope with bubbles - how appropriate!

I also use Point2 and you are correct, you get so much junk mail from them and I will have to give this a try, I love the fact that it bounces stuff to the offender. They deserve their stuff back, since we don't want it.

Hi Todd - a couple days ago there was even spam on the P2 message board, it was in the middle of a short sale discussion.  It was reported and the moderator removed it quickly (to their credit).  The entire website was spam, hopefully they took it down as well.  I smile every day when I see the garbage being bounced back to these creeps....makes life good :-) thank you MailWasher.

Gail, this was a great post.  Thanks for the tip.  I have been running all of my mail through gmail because they seem to do a really great job of catching stuff.  You can create a gmail account and then route your other email accounts through gmail and no one is the wiser.  I am going to give your program a try though.  I would like to give them a dose of their own meds.

Thanks Deborah - It's been a couple of weeks and I'm still very happy with the performance.  I've learned to use the program better which also saves times.  With the free version, you can only have one email address, so you're gmail account should work fine.  I've not purchased the ProWasher yet but it will handle multiple email addresses + some other goodies.  Hope you'll be as pleased as I am.

Gail...

Boy am I glad I picked this post to answer you.  Does it work with AOL?  If it does I'm getting it.  I spend half my time deleting/reporting spam, and sending back unsubscribe.  I've been told that's not a good thin to dosie they know they have a good e-mail address?

It's better to chat on our post (we get points, and can get back and forth easier, or our regular e-mail, you can't respond to AR's mail and no points.

Yes I have been diving since 1976 and have dove the world from PNG to Galapagos Island, Thailand, Palau, Bali, everywhere in the Caribbean (Cozumel is only a 2 hour flight from Houston :-), Caymans, Belize, etc.  In fact the picture I use here is me underwater at Roatan Honduras.  Bill took the picture back in the days of film, and it took many rolls.  A fish would swim by, the current would change, I would have to breath, body out of placement....oh well you know what it's like.

underwater lifeI love these little guys, so many different ones, each more beautiful than the last.  L

PS, just corrected 14 words in one second, one click...gotta love Google toolbar spell check!

I have bookmarked your blog and will look into this.  The way I do this now is I have three different email addresses I use.  One for personal and keeping it off spam lists, one for registering with sites that will undoubtedly become spam and another one I use for business.  This seems to control it for me.  The best thing to do is not respond to surveys or contests no matter how tempting.

Hi Liz- I seem to recall a mention of AOL, but you'll have to read their download instructions to see what it entails.  The free version only supports one email address.  I will get the pro version, but haven't got around to it, probably because the free one works so well. But I'm noticing much more spam in my Gmail account so the time is rapidly approaching.  It's also very inexpensive.

You've been on some seriously exotic dive trips, I'll bet Thailand was spectacular.  If I recall correctly your little friend is a Nudebranch, a mighty beautiful one at that :-)  Perhaps one day we can swap stories, that would be fun!

Hi Scott - Thank you so much for stopping in and for your comment.  Like you, I also have 3 different emails and over time they do start becoming inundated with spam.  That's why I'll get the pro version, to condense all emails in one place.  You almost have to see the program in action to see how it works.  NO WAY to temptation - boy are you right!!!

Chuck- OMG - can you believe the stuff that's being circulated.  I must get 10 "Hello Dear" junks a day, I've won more lotteries than the entire state of Florida....sheesh....it never ends, but I can say that this little freebie is a very big help.  Let me know how you like it.

Hi Ron - With the paid version there is a wizard which automatically configures your email accounts.  I just took a look at adding an account manually and the options are POP3, Hotmail, IMAP, and AOL.  Based on that I'm not sure if it would work with Yahoo or Gmail.  I think the paid version is $40.00 and I found a coupon for 25% off.  It's working out well.  You can only have 1 email account with the free MailWasher.
