We didn't realize this but the local Anne Arundel County Habitat for Humanity is quite active in the area! They have been building homes in the Clay Street area of downtown Annapolis as well as into Baltimore. We are really excited about this as we had thought that there would be a lot of traveling involved in order to participate on a build.
The Habitat for Humanity organization is such a wonderful program. They don't give away homes, but they allow local people who are low income and would not otherwise be able to afford a home ($34,000 income) to qualify for their very own, nice, new home. They do pay back the no-interest loan over 30 years at about $500/month. The homeowners are chosen carefully, must qualify as far as income, motivation, stability, and "sweat equity" - they are required to work on building their own home or a home for another homeowner as part of the process. Many of these buyers are single mothers trying to better their lives and their childrens. Studies show that children living in homes their parents own tend to do better in school. The stability and comfort of owning a home is taken for granted by many of us, but it is such an important element of building our communities. The Clay Street area is cleaning up and children have been seen recently feeling safe enough to play outside in the street.
Habitat for Humanity is always looking for volunteers and you don't need to be especially "handy", just have the desire to learn and help. Construction projects not your thing? You can volunteer in the office as well, doing filing, copying, answering the phones, etc. If you'd just like to donate money, you can do that as well.
