Boxers Running For Political Office

While pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. is moonlighting as a professional wrestler, other fighters are actively exploring politics as a second career. Undefeated heavyweight Joe Mesi, 34, has stated that he plans to announce his candidacy for the soon to be vacant seat in the 61st District of the New York State Senate. Mesi is well-spoken, charismatic and remains extremely popular in upstate New York, so perhaps he feels he could make an effective state Senator. Either that, or maybe he's just looking for a job which doesn't require a brain scan . . .

Former WBC heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko, 36, is nothing if not determined. Not only is he attempting to resume his career inside the ring, he's also making a second attempt to become the Mayor of Kiev, Ukraine. He previously ran for the post in 2005, but was defeated by Leonid Chernovetskiy who is now accused of corruption. The election is scheduled for May 25. Win or lose, Klitschko still intends to face Samuel Peter in September or October for the WBC title.

What is it with heavyweights and political office? Is it only a matter of time before George Foreman runs for President?
