Well effective July 23, 2008 CELL PHONE numbers were released to the public.  Yes that means yours!

CALL the National Register to add your cell phone to the DO NOT CALL LIST.

You can do this by calling from the phone you want added:            1-888-382-1222

or go to:      www.donotcall.gov

You can also register a complaint on the website, but your phone number must have been on the do not call register at least 31 days before.

I hope this helps you save your cell minutes for the calls you want to make and receive.

I knew eventually this was coming.  Until cell phone plans don't charge for minutes, I am not sure about allowing this to be public.  Oh well, what do I know??

I wish it worked the other way.  Let the telemarketing scum earn the numbers by people that like taking to them!  Wouldn't that be a great thing.

Since this is something we can all agree on, why don't we pressure Congress to enact a bill that way!

Hi Doris -

This is not really true.  There is no need to add your cell phone number to the do not call list.  You actually have to opt in, not out, to be listed.  If you do not opt in, the number is not included.

Here is the snopes.com article: http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp

Margaret:

I believe that there is always a need to register a Phone, cell or otherwise, if you do not want to be bothered by unsolicited calls.  You are partially correct in that yes you do need to opt in to be included in the directory, but that does not mean that they can not call you, it just means you are not in the directory, there are many ways to get numbers, especially in a business like ours where we publish our number everywhere.  They just have to actually dial your number, not use automation.

The following is from the Federal Trade Commission website, regarding the DO NOT CALL Registry:

"Here's what you need to know about the National Do Not Call Registry program:

  • FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

  • The federal government does not maintain a national cell phone registry. Personal cell phone users have always been able to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry - the same Registry consumers use to register their land lines - either online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 from the telephone number they wish to register. Registrations become effective within 31 days of signing up and are active for five years. There is no cut-off date or deadline for registrations.

  • Business-to-business calls are not covered under the Registry.

For More Information

To learn more about the National Do Not Call Registry and the rules that enforce it, visit the FTC at www.ftc.gov or the FCC at www.fcc.gov. For more information about a planned "wireless 411" directory, visit http://www.qsent.com/wireless411/index.shtml.

The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish (bilingual counselors are available to take complaints), or to get free information on any of 150 consumer topics, call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357), or use the complaint form at www.ftc.gov. The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft, and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad."

I hope this clarifies things, and Thanks you for sharing your website information, although I think it only tells part of the story.

Thanks for the expanded info, Doris, which is indeed more complete and informative than the  Snopes article.  However, the Snopes article included this same info as a link on the bottom.  Using the expanded info:

"FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

...Business-to-business calls are not covered under the Registry."

So it looks like we used the same info to arrive at different conclusions.  I don't think it hurts to add your cell phone number.  It just may not help, especially if our cell phones are business phones, and I don't think it is as urgent as some would have it.

There are additional links on the Snopes articles.  One is a really good Q&A on the Wireless 411 Service and the other an expanded discussion of the privacy policy.  Too lengthy to post here but I include the links below for those whom it interests.  Thanks for the clarification.

I wonder if this works for homes.com.  I somehow don't think so; I have asked I don't know how many time to be taken off their list but I still keep getting calls from them.

Isn't that the truth. Our numbers are published Everywhere. But as soon as we allow access to the automated systems, we'll have more frustration than the unwelcomed evening telemarketers. Everytime my phone rings, I assume it's business. When it's an unsolicited sales call, I'm short.

They did this for land lines a year or so ago and we still get calls all the time.  I do not have faith in that system.  Hanging up on them seems pretty effective as well as caller ID.
