When offering Freebies, I always make sure that what is listed here is safe. However, nothing is 100% safe. I always download my free programs from trusted sites and you should too.

With the instances of malware and sypware and viruses increasing daily in free software, downloading from a trusted source has become even more critical.

I trust downloads.com and majorgeeks.com because they test all the free programs they offer.

I do have two trusted sites I will share with you for testing software that you get from friends. – My thanks to Gizmo Richards (Gizmo’s Support Alert Newsletter) for turning me onto these sites!

1. Jotti’s – This is a malware scanning site that uses a variety of virus scanners to scan any files you have downloaded.

2. Virus Total – This is also a free on line malware and virus scan. Both on line tools use the same technique, which is to run your freebies through a series of virus scan programs. Using these programs does not guarantee that your file is harmless.

Unfortunately, to date, there is no 100 % effective solution to detection of malware or spyware. Using the on line software is far better than crossing your fingers or blind faith. Remember use protection…. and you should remain safe. If you have any suspicion or doubt, abstain from downloading the software.

Kathy:

Thaks for featuring my blog!  You are the best.  I have to think about the spam thing on wordpress.  Do you have the latest version?  Do you moderate the comments?  I ocassionally get some spam but I dump it right away and it seems that helps.  But I will have to try and find something that might work.  Maybe someone who reads this will have some advice

Caryn- Yes I have the latest version, and we moderate the comments....However I do not have some spam -one guy that keeps trying to get his junk on my site, and Sally's Post had some adult type spam on it.  I don't want to have to have a more complicated comment section, but don't want spam either :)

Kathy and Sally:

I am searching now for a pulgin that will solve this problem. When I find one I will write a post and share it.

I just had a look at my blog and I have trackback (pingbacks) turned off.  I get an ocassional spam on one of my posts.  I just realized that if I actually delete the wp-trackback.php file that will solve the problem for all of my posts.

To disable pingback on your wordpress posts go into the dashboard.  Select Options then select the discussions tab.  Uncheck Allow link notifications from other Weblogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.) This will disable trackbacks on future posts.  To completely disable trackbacks, you will have to edit each pas post and uncheck allow pings from the write post subpane. wp-trackback.php file.  Or do what I plan to do and delete the wp-trackback.php file completely.

I will send this via email to you as well to make sure you get it.

I just don't download stuff unless I know for sure where it is coming from.  Some people download everything and wonder where the spyware comes from.

I see so many free items on this site.  I have yet to download any of them in fear of a virus.  Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for you comment.  Being a little paronid when it comes to downloading stuff is a good thing.  If you really want a freebie then scan it first before installing it.

right on -- so important to keep your virus definitions up to date and only download from trusted sites or companies vs. individuals -- even those that you know and were not given the heads up.  Most email programs will block the ability to send an exe file.

Tatyana:  Thanks for your comments.  It is unfourtunate that with so much on our plates we have to worry about things like this too.  However, the bad guys and gals never seem to sleep!:)

Scott:  Thanks for your comment.  It is really important to keep your definitions up to date.  If you do that and download from trusted sources you should be ok.  You are correct most email programs delete email with .exe files.  That is why the nasty buggers are using links now.
