I was in Macy's yesterday just shopping around and had so many things in my hands  including a purse, a cell phone, and many clothes I planned to buy.  The burden was getting so heavy I could hardly continue shopping.  I noticed the saleslady and walked over to ask if I could leave some of the items I wanted to purchase at the counter while I continued to shop. I jokingly told her that I was running out of arms.  Without so much as even a smirk (much less smile) she snatched the bundle from me and slung the clothes on the counter, bunch up and crumpled.  I was at least shocked at her attitude, at most annoyed by her care with the items I intended to purchase.  (After all,   I'm in  Corpus Christi,  this is south Texas and usually pretty friendly people especially in a place of business.)    I continued to shop but observed her for a while noticing that she seemed to be on what appeared to me a power trip of some sort.  Apparently she was in charge of some of the other "sales girls" and was to busy shouting at them to "Get this done and, this has not been completed". To care for a measly customers needs.  I finished and went to pay for my items and she mechanically rung up my bill and then said to me the same exact thing I heard her say to numerous checkouts before me; in a fake and exaggerated voice,  "THANK YOU, and have a FANTASTIC DAY!

My first thought was to jump up and knock her off that high horse she was riding!  After I came down from my proverbial soapbox, I was a little ashamed of myself for judging her . I thought back to the other day on phone duty in the office.  I had a million things to do and was so busy, every time a call came in I had to minimize the contract I was writing, leave where I was in the MLS to look up the home they were calling about and then take names and numbers and email addresses, etc...  I realized that I was no better than she was.  I was essentially riding my own high horse of self- importance  with every sigh and groan I made before picking up that phone.  The point is this is our business and sometimes it's easy for us to lose sight on who the important people are, in this or any other business.  Our business IS our clients, customers, and prospects.  I'm going to make a mental note of how I felt in that store yesterday to remind myself to take a deep breath even if I am busy, smile and then answer the phone with a more relaxed, kind and sincere voice.  After all, the phone ringing is a good thing, if it stops ringing  we may have more of a reason to sport a bad attitude.

Tiffany,

I always try to smile when i answer the phone or speak to someone.  It's hard to have a nasty attitude and smile at the same time....at least for me it is.  I would be glad that the phone is ringing. Six months ago, I would sit desk duty for 3 hours and the phone would not ring once.

Have a great day (smile)
