New Homes, Porta-Potties, Localism, Art, & Perspectives…

By

Dear Real Estate Diary,

This evening,  I planned to go on a turtle run....but I spent most of my time exploring a a few houses in White Porta PottyWilliams Creek, a newer College Station subdivision.  I was taking pictures for a future post on the costs and benefits of new residential construction.  The price of homes in this subdivision that are currently available for sale start out at $475,000.

.

Although I was in running clothes, I ended up walking and doing some thinking.

Did you know that in College Station there are at least three different companies that provide porta-potties?  Who would have thought:  "Would you like a blue porta potty or a white one or look, here is another style of a blue one?"

Blue Porta PottyIn addition to the various brands of porta potties that I found, I was amazed at the array of different heavy equipment machinery that are   required to set up a new subdivision.

When my kids were little, they would have loved seeing the different equipment.....that was way back in the days that they got excited over seeing the garbage man come.  Hmmm.  It take a little more than that to capture their attention now.  And, me....what has happened to me?....I'm out taking pictures of porta potties and construction equipment.

The machine below can do 4 different jobs - that I noticed.

One Multi-tasking machine

Oh....the effort that goes into making a good Localism post that people might actually read

Over the last week, I've actually started thinking that the Localism might really be a great idea....if we can write posts that will actually engage readers.  To do so, we must actually create the online community that is envisioned.

However, I'm wondering of communities should be defined by interests rather than neighborhoods.

One such interest community in my area is the people that are interested in Growth Management Issues.  Williams Creek HomeThe B-CS Chamber of Commerce luncheon that had a record smashing attendance demonstrates in this topic. How would you catagorize these people into one subdivision.  How would they find what they are interested in if they have to sort through everything.

Ask me more about the Growth Management Issue topic......I LOVE to talk about it..

Another potential "interest community" is the arts.  Since the primary source of my income is from real estate sales....and this was a busy week, I've gotten behind on my blogs about the different artists I Frieda Isbell's painting "Young Lovers"have met within the last week.

For example, I spoke with Frieda Isbell...the up and coming College Station artist that a very unique, expressive style of painting.  She shared some of her newest pieces with me and welcomed any assistance that I could provide in helping her showcase her work.  This particular painting, titled "Young Lovers" had been on display at the Texas Gallery, which is part of the Arts Center, back in June.

As the sun was setting, I decided it was time to head home.  On my way,  I saw the most interesting Sunset on July 26sunset.

Although the captivating view lasted for a few minutes, I was able to get a couple more pictures and another idea for a future post.

I was wondering, is Active Rain getting you to look at the world from a slightly different perspective?

Belly laugh! I have not gotten past the third paragraph yet but the fact that you stood there and considered how many companies provide port-a-potties is hilarious...okay, back to reading...you and Carolyn are going to start a new fad. Turtle runs. I'm still laughing but I want you to know I appreciate the wonderful photos of the porta-potties. Wow.

Okay, you have redeamed yourself with the art and the sunset. Thank you for sharing your run sweetie!

Later in the rain~Deb

Sondra:  Ya know... I have often marveled at the wide array of information and education available on Active Rain.  Everyone seems to have some sort of "specialty" that they can share with others.  Now that it appears that you have the market cornered on Porta-Potties... I will have to make sure I "book mark" this post for the next time I need one when a PE (Potty Emergency) arises.  Thanks so much for sharing... LOL.  Take care... have a great Sunday !

Sondra, cute.  Without porta potties, Tom Hanks would have never gotten off that island in "Castaway."

Sondra,

Williams Creek is my favorite "new" subdivision because its subtle...it doesn't have to try.

A member of my extended family started a porta-potty business in the 70s (Albequerque). Today he owns his own island. Needless to say, there have been a lot of family jokes about how he made his money.

Happy Sunday

Oh gosh, Deb and Karen...now you two have made me laugh and laugh.

Deb, I'm glad I was able to redeem myself.

Karen, last night I found myself thinking how much money could be made from having a porta potty business.  And, then Sam came along and confirmed my suspicions.

Sam, I really like how peaceful and relaxing Williams Creek is.  The lots won't work for people with horses, but they could always board their horse down the street.  I bet your family member just laughs all the way to the bank.

Charles, I'm thinking I must have missed that Tom Hanks movie....now you have me interested in seeing it.

Bill, you are so right about new subdivisions taking a long time to be done.  This one first opened about three years or four years ago.  I sold one of the first homes.  The new subdivisions and building also creates a number of new jobs and the ripple effects help an area's economy for years to come.

I have to tell you girlfriend - Active Rain provides a variety of tools, view points and photos for my daily education. BUT, I do believe this is the first post I have seen with multiple porta potty pictures!

(Great post btw!)

Hi Debbie, in all seriousness...when I was considering all of the jobs that were created as result of new construction I would have never thought about the porta potty business.  But, there was a porta potty in front of every single new home that was under construction.  And, how many days does it take to build a home from start to finish?  Three companies...represented in maybe a half dozen houses that I looked at.   Those company owners must really like the new home construction business.

You're right Sondra - business is business and I think it's great that there are three companies that are able to compete in this segment of new home construction.

Sondra--your facts on porta-potties made me giggle. That's great (information).

The sunset is stunning, and you captured it--awesome job! You again, have written a really nice piece. You've made a good point about featuring areas of interest within a neighborhood, and not simply the neighborhood alone. I love your idea about featuring artists...

Can I ask what type of camera you use... I love your photos and the way you seem to capture the essence of the subject.

Okay, Sondra -- now you've caught Dr. John's attention.  He's very fond of porta-potties -- well he used to be when he was an Ironman triathlete -- because he'd take these mega runs and bike rides and always seemed to know the location of the porta-potties.  Great post; you're fun!  God bless you!

Sondra, I don't know if Active Rain is getting me to look at the world with a different perspective but YOU are. Who would have thunk there were three different porta potty companies? BTW the sun "sitting" picture is one of your best! Keep up the turtle runs... you done good!!

Deborah, I just now realized that I must have gotten booted off the computer before my reply to you went through.....Never too much fun to write something and have it disappear.  Thank you for the compliments.  I've been enjoying your blogs and pictures also - the volacano facinates me for some reason.

Wow...I can't believe you've asked about my camera.  I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've been taking pictures with a simple HP Photosmart R707 digital camera - or attempting to do so.  Although it has worked fine for pictures of houses and property it is limiting me on the other types of pictures that I've been taking.  No ability to add lenses, practically no ability to zoom - which is bad because it seems to shrink what my eye sees.   Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Terry!  I didn't realize that Dr. John was a triathlete also.  Wow.  I'll see you around. God Bless you too my friend.

Gary, thanks for having Eagle eyes!  I no longer know what you are referring to. :)   I just wish that setting sun would have shown up as big in the picture as it looked in person.  It was an awesome sight.

Sondra, My favorite color is blue so I'm all for the blue porta potties.  I think those white ones are kind of boring.
