Granite Counters Dangerous to our Health?

By
Real Estate Agent with BCR Realtors 262359

Today I heard several reports on the news that they think granite counters could be unhealthy in homes because they think granite can harbor germs. I know granite has tiny fissures and cracks in it, and those tiny cracks are part of what gives it character. Well that may,  or may not be the case.   I am sure the grout in ceramic tile joints can harbor germs. Just about anything can harbor germs including us. So what do we do?  We keep everything clean.

I don't believe it is a good idea regardless to put food directly on counter tops. Probably safer to use cutting boards that can be washed and sanitized in the kitchen sink.

Many of the new homes in the College Station area  have granite counters at least in the kitchen. In fact granite has almost become a household name even in modestly priced new and retrofitted homes, compared to years ago when only the finest homes had granite.

Granite has low levels of radon. If you open and close an door or a window of your home you mitigate the radon. Also the granite tops should be sealed.

Good luck and success

Informative post, I hadn't heard this before.  Well....I guess I do know that we are supposed to keep our counter tops clean.

I want granite too.  And you are so right about the cleanliness thing.  Actually we keep our formica counter so clean that you wouldn't mind eating off of it.  Under the counter is a stack of cutting boards so that there is always a clean one available.  There are a lot of ways to have granite without germs.

Trey - this is the first time I have heard the germ issue. I have heard the radon story before.

Little know fact, wood cutting boards tend to have less germs than the plastic ones. Not sure why.

You just never know what kind of problems people can come up with for the materials we use in our homes.

Granite camoflauges the bread crumbs. Just keep it sealed and use cutting boards because like you said, it's almost become a household name.

A counter is not a plate!  Who would eat off a counter?  Sometimes the studies done play on our fears.  We need a few germs around so we can develop antibodies and stave off infections.  No pain no gain.

You are right!  After all ....unless you still live in a cave you don't eat directly off the counter and if you are cutting things on the counter you deserve whatever you catch. ;-)

Also the radon report that is out on granite is highly disputed.

Our 11 y.o. niece (100lbs)was hanging from the edge of our delicatus granite countertop and the overhang (10") broke off and broke both of her feet! That really hurt! Alot!!! She'll never do that again. She also has to pay us $6000 to replace it. Life sucks. (just kidding...none of this is true...but anything could happen.
