A few months ago I wrote a blog about our new store coming to town, Harp's Grocery.  I was negligent in that I never went back to take a completed photo of it but it sprang up overnight, seemingly, and it is beautiful.   I've been there a few times and bought lovely things, at high prices for sure because they've got to recoup all the money they've invested in Searcy AR.  What happened yesterday makes me wonder about their integrity.  They lied to me and all their customers about their avocados!

My husband has hinted loudly that he'd like some avocado dip because we have fresh tomatoes now and he thinks I make great avocado/tomato dip.

I know when an avocado is ripe, having all this dip experience, and Harp's avocados were all hard as baseballs.  But some of them had this beautiful orange sign on them saying, "Ripe now!"

This is the South and lots of people in the South don't know what an avocado is. We don't have avocado trees here!  So if they go in and buy this little hardball and take it home to cut it, they're going to against the avocado for life!!

Now if we talk about tomatoes, the Southern person knows the tomato!  We know vine ripened ones from imported greenhouse ones.  We buy the bad ones because we have no other choice but we drool over ones like the ones shown.  Note the one on top that is certainly not perfect and may have a little decay in the center but the part that you can eat will be scrumptious!  That's the kind we'll put in the avocado dip as soon as I wait a few days for the Harp's avocado to ripen.

You know what!  I'll bet you the store stocker at Harp's is from the South and never knew what an avocado was until he got that job.  He picked out the biggest and prettiest and stuck the little labels on them.

He is innocent.

Harp's is innocent

We're going to have avocado dip.

And I've written a blog about nothing!

Except beautiful Home Grown Tomaters!

Barbara,

Funny post!  I hate hard avocados!  I like to peel and slice them and eat them!

Carol, I forgot to say this to you.  As I looked at that avocado I thought of you.  I thought, "Carol would write a blog about that thing and make an interesting blog.  I can't write as well as she does but I'm going to write one as best I can."   So you were my inspiration....along with that baseball avocado.

Mary, you couldn't have eaten this one for a few days.  Thanks for comments.

Just a bit of information from someone who is from the South born and raised and happens to also have worked in both Harps and Wal-mart produce dept.  Alot of stores get those avocadoes with the tags on them that say ripe on them.  They come like that.  The stores clerks dont put those tags on them you moron!  If you want to cry about avacodoes not being ripe yet think of it this way.  If they came in ripe and soft they would go bad in a day or so.  If they go bad fast then they have to order more all the time.  This would make the price of them go up and also increase the odds of you getting a bad avocado.  Think about it or do you just run off at the mouth like an idiot.

The produce clerk at Wal Mart is calling our Barbara an idiot? If you are such a mental giant why are you the clerk and not the manager? You probably don't know a tomato from a banana.

Barbara
Don't worry about this nut job he is jealous cuz you got some pretty nice tomatoes baby.

WOW!  From Barry and Produce Clerk and Raven!  There are some strong feelings about avocados!  I'm sorry, Produce Clerk, that I hurt your feelings about an incorrect label on an avocado.  And Barry Bridges, thanks for sticking up for me!  And Raven?   Well, why are you here?  Looks as if you are laughing at me!

I've never seen this label on another avocado since this silly blog, either in Harps or Wal-Mart or any other grocery store.  Perhaps if they come in that way, clerks are now taking them off?

Dear Mrs Barbara,

It was nice that Raven could posthumously lend support. As a former certifried fruit and vegetables manager I am a bit putout that this person would tie into you like that. I think perhaps that person's outlook might improve by drinking a bottle of prune juice, then wait 24 hours before posting again.

Nutsy, you ARE my good friend.  And so is the commenter Barry Bridges.  I need to meet him.  I did laugh at drinking prune juice!!

Terri, one good thing about the person who was angry is that this blog became active again.  It's an old blog and now has been revitalized!  I want some avocado dip too!!!

Dear Mrs Barbara,

I used to be an avocado inspector. Actually, I was a certifried avocado inspector. I was looking through my old pictures and found this one. I wore the outfit, with the yellow safety stripes, so the pickers did not mistake me for a piece of fruit. Let your detractor feast on this expertise.

Charles and Steven and Nutsy, you guys crack me up!  ROFLMAO.....is that the way you say it?

I'm inspired to write another blog about this incident so I think I'll just post it now.  It needs to be featured, not because it's good but because it gives good advice!

And Charles, I'm so glad you have now come to grips with your loss!  He's still working for you on the other side.  Brilliant!!!  True inspiration!!!!!!

I love that avocado tree picture.  Being from the south, I'm not sure I've ever seen one.  Perhaps once when I visited a friend in California who had  one in the backyard?  No.  That was an artichoke tree!  But Nutsy is better looking than an avocado!!!!
