The Legend of St. Mary's - St. Petersburg, Florida

St Mary's - St Petersburg FloridaAccording to legend, the architect of this beautiful building had a disagreement with the owners - supposedly he wasn't paid, or wasn't paid all that was agreed, so he was very unhappy.

Shortly thereafter, the city of St Petersburg made a request for bids, for someone to design a public restroom facility in the center of Saint Petersburg, Florida.  The architect intentionally made a very low bid, and won the contract to design the toilets.  Here's the result:

The architect, Henry Taylor, designed various other buildings in St. Petersburg. Here are some architectural links that may be of interest:

Rick & Ines - so you've given me some homework? Great! That's what this group is all about. I've spent an interesting hour doing some research for you.  I've edited the post above and added some links to these two buildings as well as others in the Renaissance Revival style that Henry Taylor, the architect, designed.  The idea for the architecture of this church came from Father Riordan, the first paster. After studying for the priesthood in Ireland, Father Riordan spent some time in Rome and the San Stefano Rotundo in Rome influenced him. He originally asked for a round church, but the resulting structure, build in 1929, was octagonal. The contractor was A.P. Hennessy & Sons. It was built in 1929 and had renovations in 1955, 1985 and 1995.

Sharon - that is great history!!  Henry Taylor was well known around this area - and the priest's concept is super interesting.  I love to find a little history on buildings like these and then everything starts making so much sense.  Thanks for doing the research.

Ines (btw - it's always me doing the blogging)

Carole - we don't need to make up stories - history has enough of them. It's fun to dig into history.
