By
Real Estate Agent with Eco-Steward Realty

The small town of Black Mountain is located approximately 15 miles east of Asheville in Western North Carolina. The community name is due to its location,  being nestled in the front range of the Black Mountains, which are part of the Appalachian Mountain Range.  These are the highest mountains in the Eastern United States with Mount Mitchell topping out at 6,684 feet. The population of Black Mountain is approximately 12,000 with many of the community members living close to the quaint downtown area. There are a variety of  arts and crafts galleries, antique shops, bookstores and furniture stores along with a hiking and mountain supply shop. The town also features some great restaurants including vegetarian, a natural food store, and some great coffee shops.  There is a vibrant sense of community here with many locals participating in a variety of art and cultural initiatives.

There is a growing interest in this area with such close proximity to Asheville. As of March 21st  79 homes were on the market in Black Mountain area ranging from $140,000 up to 1 million dollars.  Many people are buying both as vacation homes as well as year round residences.

I love Black Mountain!  Amazing to me how much it's grown and how much it's changed over the past few years.

Hi Leigh:

I like the area too. Just a great place to walk around. I think it is going to change big time though with the massive Cliffs development happening in Swannanoa just a few miles down the road.

We visited Black Mtn for first time May 2007 and really liked it. We plan on moving there soon from Oregon coast?  Anything else good or bad you can think of about the area?  We don't like snow, but like to garden and love outdoors. Lizzy

The winters in Black Mountain are pretty mild with not too much snow ( only a couple of days last year). Plus snow melts since most days get above 32 degrees.  If you like gardening and the outdoors Black Mountain as well as most of Western North Carolina is definitely a place to check out!
