The Varsity Celebrates 80 Years!

In downtown/midtown Atlanta, just across Interstate 75 from Georgia Tech there is a local landmark called The Varsity! The Varsity is billed as the World's Largest Drive-In Restaurant. This iconic Atlanta landmark is not where you will find the latest in French infused Asian cuisine. In fact the only thing remotely French at the Varsity is the name "French" fries; the side item which is by the way an American creation!

On the Varsity Menu you will find all manner of hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, chicken, and salads. Being located in the same city as Coke's World Headquarters, you can of course have a cold Coke! If however you want a real treat, try one of the fantastic orange shakes with a side order of the delicious onion rings. If you have more of a sweet tooth and want to try a southern delicacy, pair your orange shake with either an apple fried pie or a peach fried pie!

On Saturday, August 2nd the Varsity (Downtown Location) will be celebrating their 80th year of operation. From 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM the varsity will be giving away free cake, ice cream, and balloons. All regular menu items will still be available for purchase. On the restaurant's upper deck there will be free live music performed by, The Cool Whips, The Hibbert Brothers and The Planet Rock Experience. There will also be a live remoteĀ  featuring the local FM radio station, 97.1 The River. Click HERE for a map!

If you are a long time resident, a new transplant, or a visitor, you should definitely have a casual lunch at this Atlanta original. Happy 80th Anniversary to The Varsity!

Rich, I have eaten at this place a many a time when I lived in Atlanta. Might be the best chili dog around.

Rich, Hot dogs and onion rings. My mother introduced the Varsity to me when I was growing up (she is an Atlanta native) and I recently had the pleasure of sending my son there on a trip with some friends to a concert.  When I am there, I go as often as possible, but must admit, it has been several years. I am going there next time I am in town.

Rich, It sounds like so much fun, a real drive in restaurant--I would love it even without the free cake!  Anything that has survived that long has got to be great!

Danny - It is an Atlanta landmark! And don't forget those onion rings!

Bo - It is a definite stop whenever I am in Atlanta to see the Braves or visiting friends. Pretty neat how your mom introduced you to it and now you have introduced your son to it!

Carole - The onion rings and orange shakes are the best around!

Love The Varsity.  It's like stepping back in time.  Definitely the place to cruise to on a summer night.  Amazing that it has survived in spite of the national fast food joints all over the place.  Thanks for the post.  Great memories.

It's my cheat day.  So I just read this having eaten a chili cheese dog for dinner and a Sundae for dessert, did I mention it's my cheat day.  Anyhow, just reading this made me feel 5 lbs. heavier- lol:-)  Didn't realize Coke was headquartered in Knoxville.
