What is the difference between this pre-election economy and the last one?

Memory seems to fail me more every year but it sure seems like we have been through a familiar pre-election economic downturn more than once before that eerily resembles this one to me.  True the factors for the situation may be a little different, but it all seems way to familiar to me.  It is sort of like profit taking from the voters to create a mindset that makes them want to go to the polls, as if that would really make any difference.  When you have a limited choice of two parties that can actually afford to comptete, and the choices are which one will be the least likely to do us wrong while in office, does it really make all that much difference.  Sorry, just had to get that off my chest so I can say that I am sure glad the price of oil and gasoline are starting back down again, interest rates are still low, and mortgage companies are ready to do business again, so lets go people, get out there and buy some property, soon!  Oh yeah, and don't forget to vote next week, it really does matter, at least that is what all us veterans fought for.

Steve - I remember the same thing.  Just before the last big national election we were saying, "the economy will turn around after the election."  It sort of did, for awhile.

Amen on the two parties and trying to find the one that won't screw us over the most. Everything is about money and if you don't have the big money you can't compete with the big guys even if you are better... ie. Wal-Mart vs mom & pop shops. The big guys have the money and can buy in extreme bulk so they can sell lower and run the little guys out of town, no different than politics. Voting for the local stuff matters, but voting for president really doesn't anymore with this electoral college junk. I'd love to see a little guy even come close.

Thanks Gretchen, I didn't think it was just in my mind, it really seems like deja-vu too!  Chris, when you look at the options, it is hard to believe that this is the best there is, but it is, but you are right, the little guy never gets a chance, he or she has to make it in spite of the odds, but you know what they say, the cream always rises to the top, eventually!  Hang in there, it will all work out in the wash.
