Why is Richard Simmons in St. Louis?

By
Real Estate Agent with St. Charles County, Missouri - Prudential Alliance Realtors

Of course, he's promoting his "Sweatin' to the Oldies" DVD, but he is also here in St. Louis for another reason.  He is concerned about the lack of physical exercise offered to kids in school.

He said that 40% of today's schools offer no physical education or recess.  He remembers that he was 200 lbs. in the 8th grade and 268 lbs. when he graduated from high school.  He doesn't want other children to experience his childhood.

He will be at the Walgreens at 441 N. Kirkwood Road from 6-8 p.m. this evening (7/30/08).

I wonder what schools he is looking at. Seems hard to believe 40% of schools offer no physical exercise or recess. They have to have State and Federal guidelines.

Kevin - It sounds kind of high to me too, but that's what he said.  I'm not sure where he's getting his numbers.  :)

I think his numbers are fat. :)

But then, hey, that's his business - lose weight.

Kevin - LOL!  I'm sure he's truly concerned about the well-being of children.  They really do need to exercise more and stay away from the television and video games... (don't we all?)   :)

Actually, I think the numbers he quoted are dead-on accurate.  P.E. is no longer mandatory in most schools, although it was when we were kids.

Jason - Really?  I didn't know that. When I was in school (after walking miles up hill both ways to get there and back),   :)     we not only had P.E., but we also played ALOT outside after we got home doing all sorts of things.  We rarely sat down or went inside.  Today, it's different...

Its frightening to think that there are schools with no recess.  Not only is it good for physical well-being its really great for mental health too.

Stacey-Ann - Maybe he's talking about junior high with no recess or physical education.  I'm not sure.  :)

Debi.. I wonder where/what schools have cut out PE? Here in CT it is still mandatory.  I think physical exercise (especially for boys) is much needed.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

You're not as old as me or you would remember that Eisenhower initiated a physical exercise program in the grade schools in the 1950s. And look at how well that turned out.

Hi Debi,

I think he truly care about the kids, many of them don't get enough physical activity. After school they veg out playing video games and snacking. :)

Elizabeth - I'm a 60's baby, so I guess I don't remember that...Did grade schools have P.E. or are  you talking about recess?

Suzanne - Times have really changed.  I remember never wanting to come inside when I was a kid...  :)
