As Bob alluded to yesterday in his post about the Localism land rush schedule, we have been diligently following all of the conversations on ActiveRain about our members' likes and dislikes of the new Localism; we have taken your feedback and turned it into the "NEW New Localism" which will be launching before the end of August!

Without further ado here is a screenshot of what we are working on: (click the picture for a full resolution version)

Although it's highly unusual for a web company to reveal super top secret information like this to the public over a month before the expected release date, we believe that we need to share this design with our members now because it affects how their Localism sponsorships will be displayed in the near future.  The primary component you should notice is that the sponsorship area was moved from the left side of the screen to the right side (as indicated by the GIANT arrow).  We made this change primarily because you, our members, requested that it be moved to a slightly less commanding position.  As a result of the reduced prominence on the page we lowered the price of the sponsorship from $15/community to $9. In retrospect I completely agree with our members that this new position is far better.

Of course you also notice that the graphical elements of the site received a major makeover. For example, resulting from another common member request, we added a lot more color to the site.

Lastly you may have noticed the different colored tags on the top of the page.  Those I can't talk about, but trust me when I say that what they represent is AWESOME!

Click here to sponsor your community (shameless plug)

So are you saying that the TOP NEIGHBORS will have priority OVER the PAID SPONSORSHIPS????

I need to know this NOW because I'll not be signing up for a paid spot if those who don't pay are featured above me.

Thanks,

Just love what we're doing with the place. Like Rich, I like the tags, just don't like that the Classi fieds is broken up but I realize it's just a screen shot and still in Beta!  All the love to Glin man for a job well done.

Jon, I tend to agree with Jason - Your profile pics on Localism are much easier on the eyes than the one of AR.  Will this be a feature that is available for all members or just for Top Neighbors and Community Sponsors?  I really need an answer as it will certainly effect whether I will join Localism and contribute to my community or mail my license back to the board!  I really don't see any other choices.

The splash of color commands attention and is not over powering. Wonderful job.

Interesting placement of the sponsor - but for me, you've caught my interest. I'm more interested in the other "tools' sponsorship will afford me vs the static spot on the sponsored page.

Thanks for giving us a look, Jon! I see Jason already beat me to commenting about your new look. A couple of questions and observations about the NEW new:

  • Has the Localism logo changed to a street sign?
  • Looks like front-page posts will only be eight lines plus a (more...) link, but I think the entire Sponsor's Description should be displayed. Maybe limit it to a certain word count. And there shouldn't be comments on the Description, right?
  • The categories -- Blogs, Events, Classifieds, Reviews -- who will edit these?
  • If a business or other community member wants to advertise, is there a way for them to buy space on the neighborhood's home page?

Jon, Looks Fantastic. It looked great before, but now it is awesome. I do have the same question as a couple of other member: 1) Do top neighbors (serious bloggers) have priority over sponsored neighborhood on the page? 2) If I were to sponsor a few neighborhoods do I have first right of refusal each month?

11:56pm • #16

Cameron:  You've got to be kidding, right? For $9 you get to provide the community/neighborhood description, have your picture displayed, all your contact info, and 3 links of your choice. If you're a consistent contributor of valued local content, you should show up as one of the Top Neighbors. Sound like a pretty sweet deal to me!...

I really like the way this looks.  I think adding the color is a great addition.

Two questions - how can I change my profile in Localism?  I logged in but couldn't not find the right area to make a change?  Additionally, can I add photos other than through my blog posts? If so, how?  Thanks,

Localism Sponsor

Rich.... you sound like you have a vested interest in AR & want to keep those who DON'T sponsor a neighborhood happy.

Why wouldn't the sponsoring agent have top billing?

One more question... Maybe I'm missing something... What is the purpose of the Sponsorship?

Cameron

Cameron - I think you managed to encapsulate the fears of longtime AR veterans in your two comments here.  Anyone who has been consistently posting great material on ActiveRain for awhile is peeved by the idea that a newbie can just write a check and instantly appear to be an "expert" for their area.  I think the sponsorship will have SEO value with the links, and business value with the exposure.  I definitely think putting this below the folks who actually contribute great content to the site is a move in the right direction.

405,792 Points 179 Featured Posts Localism Sponsor Outside Blog

Cameron:  A vested interest? Hmmm, I guess you could say that. Vested in two ways, actually. Vested as member of ActiveRain Staff, but also vested as a licensed real estate agent who derives a great deal of benefit from my involvement here. So vested, you better believe it! And I will be gladly sponsoring a community come tomorrow. Personally, I like that Top Neighbors is placed about the paid sponsorship. It will encourage consumers (the folks we're trying to engage and connect with) to participate more. And again, as I stated previously, if you're contributing consistent quality content to your blog, you'll show up as a Top Neighbor anyway, right?

The purpose of sponsoring in a nutshell: To enhance/grow your sphere and networking opportunities; to increase your visibility and exposure. So many people are limiting their vision by only thinking of existing cities and communities. The networking and sphere creation possibilities are limitless.

My job is to keep EVERYONE happy!

Hi Jon...so a new new Localism....what will you guys think of next LOL :)  Anyway, I too like the move of the page, and people that have written a lot are still on there...except for people that have just contributed photos....I don't think they should be Top Neighbors....especially if they don't live in the area.  Just my 1/100,000th of an opinion :)

Jonathan, A belated congratulations on ActiveRain's recent milestone. I am delighted to be a part of the historical 100,000 plus. What a great community, clearly  the product of structure and vision.

I checked out the sample Localism page and it looks great. I am so excited. It must be wonderful to see a long-term vision reach a level of maturity. I thank you, our Community Builders and those behind the scenes that do so much to enhance our experience here. You guys are the epitome of professionalism and class.

I see Localism as a great opportunity to promote the uniqueness of my community and to become more familiar with my neighbors. There are certainly endless possibilities. My only concern, and it may be premature but how technologically savvy do I have to be or will the lack of technological skills be compensated for in templates?

Have a wonderful and prosperous kickoff.

Warmest regards.

JONATHAN - Moving the paid position to a lower spot makes sense, but the width of the posts still seems to be the same, which means that posts that look perfect on AR will not fit into the format.  Is anything being done to address this problem?

I like this a lot better than the first version, which left me underwhelmed.  This looks very nice.

I also am pondering sponsoring communities. but I have a problem - one thing that I would like to sponsor is actually straddling the county line and part of it is in one county, and part in the other.  Will I need to sponsor it twice (one for each county???)

That will make it difficult for me - there are three that I want to sponsor but I do not want to sponsor 4.

I like the changes.  I think people respond to color and it makes the site more interesting to look at.  I guess my only observation, which has been considered to some extent, is that I work in about 10 towns in the greater Nashua area, and we don't have the types of "neighborhoods" that other places have... Also, I have seen a lot of mistakes in looking at the NH pages -- I assume those will be addressed in time.  I am impressed by your taking the time to make localism a win/win for AR and for its members.  thanks.

I like the new layout.  It looks easier to navigate and the "tags" are an interesting feature.  They look like they'll help direct visitors to where they want to go quickly.  I noticed a comment by Adam about the different width of the localism posts: I'm no techie and don't know how to compensate my graphs so that they look OK in the new localism.  However, I have faith that this too is something you're working on to make it easier on us poor souls!

Jon, the new look is very visually appealling and much more inviting for the consumer.  I still have questions about how older posts display in the new new localsim - they are less than appealing and I don't have the time to edit a years worth of local information to make them look right on the new site.  Also, pics from existing blogs are not displaying (at least not in the test version) and I'm VERY concerned about that.

You guys are doing a great job, I'm just along for the ride.  But I'd like the ride to be just a tad less bumpy :)

I'm trying to get up to speed with the new localism.... I noticed that the new localism doesn't have the same format as AR or our outside blog in terms of width.  So, when I post a blog to AR I can just designate it as to AR... what about when you post a blog and just designate it to post to localism or your outside blog?  Will a post I just send to localism or my outside blog appear when someone clicks activerain.com/blogs/cliftonjs?  Does that even make sense?

Jon, It's time to leave Vegas, give up the glitter, the midnight shows and come on home.   Home is where we live and work.   I like it. AJ

Being your "guinea pig" state, I think you all did really well today.  I had about a 30 minute delay while sorting through my communities, but considering everything, AR did a great job.  Thanks!

Thanks for the sneak peek - that really helps to clear things up.  I like the new new look too.  Looking forward to being able to upload some more good pictures soon.... how long do we have to wait for that?  BTW - when we upload pics to the posts do those ever migrate over to Localism on their own?

This looks much, much better, more friendly and more interesting than the previous screen setup.  Very nice, thank you for listening to all of us and sharing it early.

Thank you AR members and staff. It truly shows that you were and ARE listening. I see no reason to not strive to stay a top neighbor in my areas of Firstone Park, Akron and Summit County, Ohio. The sponsorship is not threatening to me and I have purchased Firestone Park anyway.

I did not have to, as I am the only AR member and top neighbor here anyway, but I do want to support AR and it's staff for all the hard work and giving so much service to me for free this past year. I am the one who benefited, as I see it. Thank you, David!

Jon, I see this result when I google one of my listing addresses but the link does not work:

What's up with that?  (Not being sarcastic!)

Paula:  for more information, go HERE and HERE

Lisa:  The Listings and Market Reports are not being populated yet. Once we finish creating the tabs/links, they'll show up on their own separate page within the community.

This IS crowded here!  I did not know about the re-positioning until after I sponsored 4 but I think it's good content counts also!  Can't wait to see what the tags are all about:-)

Lisa,

We are in the process of setting up the (first iteration of the) real estate section for localism.  Once up, Google will again send people to your listings.

Looks interesting.  Just trying to navigate around the new feel.  I've still got questions about the top 3 cities in my area.  They were not available for purchase.

So now that it is no longer pre-launch - what do the color tags mean - is there another post on that somewhere?
