Los Angeles Bans Fast Food - OMG - What's Next?

7-30 south central restuaurant ban

Never mind that our state is 30 days into its new fiscal year with no budget in sight. Never mind that we are facing an $18 Billion dollar deficit and that 200,000 state workers might be placed on the Federal minimum wage of $6.55 starting tomorrow. Never mind that our education system teeters on the brink of insolvency and that our roadways are a pothole away from dysfunctional as our highway taxes are directed toward trying to keep the doors of the State Capitol open. Never mind that our once-popular Republican Governator Ahnold makes Barack Obama look conservative by his willingness to pander to the tax-and-spend liberals who dominate our legislature.

wcBy God we are able to focus on and accomplish the big things that really count in this state. Why just yesterday the Los Angeles City Council became the first in the nation to ban fast food chains from opening in 32 square miles of the city, home to 500,000 mostly poor people. Why, you may ask? Because those people are FAT and they don't need more fast food - they need healthier food and grocery stores so they can prepare their own healthier food, that's why.

foodNever mind that these are the same people who burned most of their own grocery stores a few years back to get even with 'the man' for beating Rodney King. The grocery chains have not exactly been beating down the doors to rebuild in this area. Never mind that many of these people can't even afford a  diet of fast food nor do they opt for the healthy alternatives offered by the existing fast food outlets. Ignore the fact that most are ill-trained to prepare their own gourmet vegetarian lo-cal chi-chi meals and/or lack the time, interest or facilities to do so. Ignore as well the fact that fast food restaurants account for 45% of the current food outlets in this area and provide a like number of local jobs in an area where unemployment is chronic

mcdThe law's sponsor, City Councilor Jan Perry, said the law is a "victory for the people of South Los Angeles. We need to attract sit-down restaurants, full service grocery stores and healthy good alternatives." She pushed for the legislation because statistics show her constituents had a higher incidence of disease linked to obesity than some other parts of Los Angeles. So the government needed to step into the lives of those poor misguided souls and take control. Don't worry about exercise or education on proper diet to control your weight, the government will just take away your source of inexpensive food and neighborhood employment opportunities because we know what's best. As soon as we attract some upscale sit-down restaurants you all can trot your fat asses in there to work and if you save your money you can afford to eat there too.

ioFortunately this comes on the heels of their ban on trans-fats after 2010 so the French fries will taste like crap anyway, and just before the ban takes effect on plastic bags so they got nothing to carry the food home with either. You think Hollywood is the only area of SoCal that specializes in unreality? If we were only that lucky.

restaurant

So the people of South Central, who have been preyed upon and victimized by nearly every faction imagineable over the years, are once again relegated to subservience by some 'enlightened and well-meaning' liberals who know what these people need better than they know themselves. As Ronald Reagan once said - one of the scariest statements you will ever hear is 'We're from the government and we're here to help you.' Ain't it the truth.

There really is no end to the insanity is there?  This kind of social engineering BS at the state level is just absurd... yet it becomes law anway.  Heaven help us all.

Thankfully there is someone looking out after me since my mother quit doing that about 40 years ago.

Everyone should be wary because history shows that many things that get started in California spread to the rest of the nation over time. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

This is bad.

Mmmm.  As far as I can recall, the only thing good coming from west to east in the past 25 years was Buyers' Agency.

Fact is, folks get what they vote for.  Vote Socialists into office and you'll get oppressive social engineering crammed down your throat.

Wow ~ Lenn Harley for President. I love what you have to say! Vote socialists into office and you don't get democracy you get communism. Plain and simple. And then the government will tell us what to think, and even what to eat.

Wouldn't it be interesting if your state had this much oversight on mortgages?  You wouldn't have foreclosures if regulators were doing their job.  Government that do not want you to look at real issues, create other ones.  Do you ever feel our leaders on all levels are pathetic?

Gene - does the term "redlining" come to mind? First the smoking ban (I don't smoke but am against those), now these.

Jim Crawford! Shame on you! Pathetic leaders on all levels! Well, I'll be!

[Insert SHOCKED! emoticon and ROTFLMAO emoticon here since I'm SHOCKED and ROTFLMAO.]

Phil Gramm, who was in the news a few weeks ago, was my Economics 301 professor at Texas A&M University way back in the 1970s. He left his professorship to get into politics. Since he "gave me a C" in Eco 301, I felt that I had a personal connection with his thoughts and ideas, so I voted for him. Later on, we found out that our great Conservative U.S. Senator (R-TX) had used a few million dollars from his campaign donations to build a really nice vacation home, in Maine I believe it was. Nothing in the law prevented him from doing that. He lost my vote, though. I think I voted for his Democratic opponent in the next election, although Phil won handily.

This is rediculous. What will happen is the merchants  will leave and there will be no jobs.

Russell- I happened to agree with what Phil Gramm said a couple weeks ago - that we have become a nation of whiners who's economic complaints are mostly mental. Also - why get into politics if you can't spend a few million of somebody else's hard earned money on a well-deserved vacation home for yourself. I need to expand my place in Colorado and I'm thinking of running for city council here so I can fund the project.

Jim - oversight on mortgages? Surely you jest. After all, we're the state that not only allows you to represent the buyer AND seller in a transaction, but you can also do the mortgage for the buyer. Oh yeah, we're trying to pass a law right now that would require you to PROMINENTLY DISCLOSE that you are also playing the lender. Pathetic doesn't even come close in many cases.

Lenn- Another good thing coming from west to east is when I visit DC for the NAR conference each May and I'll be headed to Orlando in November. Other than that, sadly, - not much of note. Socialists indeed. You should see our state legislature. There are fewer socialists in the governments of France and Italy than we have here.

Russell- Mom always knew best. At a state level we're also trying to ban Mylar balloons because...mmmm, well they might float away and hit a power line and cause an outage or a fire or they might drift off to the ocean and choke a whale. No indication that's ever happened but we should outlaw them just in case. Thanks Mom.

All I know is the pictures of all those burgers you post made me hungry!!!

I also just read that the congress is back on the regulate tobacco bandwagon.  They don't have the b##!s to ban it  - who then would pay that $3 a pack tax?

Gene- LA is the new "wild west" you have gangs, high crime, illegal aliens running around free from prosecution.  Cops losing their jobs for minor stuff, juries that wont convict people AND more murders in LA than Iraq but it looks like the major issue is fatties!  No wonder they call it La La Land!

Hey, Gene.

Yes, Phil Graham was so correct, but in our politically correct world, it takes someone who isn't running for office to tell it like it is. Hmmmmmmm. That's what he did in Eco 301, too. No wonder I made a C. Ooops, I mean, no wonder why he gave me a C; I guess he didn't like my whining! LOL (we need emoticons here at Active Rain).

Ain\'t it the truth. If I lived in LA city, I'd be going crazy. LA & SFO are even whackier than the state in general and that's bad enough. We're havin some fun now.

Gene,

They're not really gonna ban White Castles are they?!  I survived on those things going to college!  They're breakfast for Champions!!  Say it ain't so!

Sadly for us we don't have White Castles. We can buy the little freezer packs of sliders but no WC's to get the full helping of grease/onion. We have to make do with In-n-Out Burgers, which are just as greasy but much larger, whenever we get the old In-N-Out urge.

Dare I admit that I've never been to In-N-Out? I'm still a McDonald's fan. Best fries in the world!

I'm not an In-N-Out fan either, but my kids are. I'm a BK man myself but I do miss the fries cooked in motor oil or whatever made them so tasty. Oh well, I guess my heart is thankful for the non-trans-fats. Thanks, government, for saving me from myself again.

That's an In-N-Out multi-multi. Since we don't have White Castles where you can pack off a sackful o' sliders, In-N-Out just stacks 'em as high as you want. Most go with single-single, double-double or even triple-triple but for the truly hearty eaters among us (and you know who you are).
