1. The first way: Under every post, there is a Bookmark Icon By simply clicking on the icon it will add that particular post to your ActiveRain Bookmarks which can then be accessed by going to "My Home" and then "My Bookmarks" the link is located down on the lower left side of your My Home Page. This is very limited as you can't sort, group, or manage posts as you might like to. The more you add, the harder they are to find and utilize. They also get re-sorted as comments are made, making it even more challenging to find and use them effectively in the future.
How often do you check your Bookmarks?
2. The second way: Create a folder on your Desktop by right clicking your mouse on a blank space of your desktop, then select create a "New Folder" give it a name, then add your favorites to that folder. To add a page or post to the folder, just drag and drop the URL for that post or website into the Folder. Now you'll have them all in one easy to access location on your desktop. The only thing is, you'd still have to create sub groups or folders to manage all your saved posts and stay organized. It's still limited, but it works well.
3. The third and best way: Is to use Diigo.com. You all know me, I'm always searching for a "Better Way!" Diigo is a FREE Social Bookmarking tool, designed to do more of what you originally intended to do when you bookmarked things in the first place. It's what bookmarking posts is all about. I have hundreds so here's why I'm suggesting it.
Group and categorize all your favorite posts
Share your Bookmarked Post with others
Highlight portions of posts and Blog about them
Automatically Tweet or Twit them with a single click
Email and share your Bookmarks easily with others
Bookmarks now become Social Bookmarking
Add the Diigo toolbar to your browser for One Click Saves
Create a widget, make it easy for others to bookmark you
Here's a video that will give you a better understanding of Diigo.com and how "Social Bookmarking" can be used, and why it may be the best way for bookmarking ANY page or post on the Internet in the future.
Screenshot of the Toolbar you can add to your Browser. It's taking Bookmarks to the next 2.0 level.
Here's a sample of my Diigo Categories and Bookmarks:
There are many other great features and options you'll have with Diigo, there's just too many to list here, but you really should check it out. I don't see any reason why every Web-surfer and Blogger wouldn't use this tool if they knew it was available.
This in my opinion is the best way to keep track and manage all of your favorite posts, Websites, Blogs etc. It's Bookmarking 2.0 and will give you more value and benefits than just using your current Browser to "Add To Favorites." I'm not sure if people even use that browser bookmarking tool anymore, which by the way, would be the 4th way to save your favorite Bookmarks. Hope you Diigo this post! :-)

Hi Brad, I have used del.icio.us and have found it to be so very useful. But I am always interested in what is out there so I will set this up and try it. I appreciate you sharing it with us. It looks like it has a very nice format.
This is now bookmarked so I can refer to it while I set up diigo. I agree with you I have gotten way to many "favorites" and traditional bookmarks to manage.
Brad- How is this different from Stumbleupon? I signed up for that a while ago and truthfully have no idea what to do with it. But if you like it, I'll be sure to check it out.
This is very cool, Brad, and just what I needed. I have no oragization to teh posts I have bookmarked, adn like you there are hundreds. Will definitely check this out.
Brad - thank you for the info. I wish I could add a profound comment, but I just appreciate your resourcefulness for the rest of us -- even if it is your job.
Lori - this has some awesome features, I'm just sorting through all my bookmarks now.
William - del.icio.us is very cool too. I have not compared diigo, but I'm diggin diggo's tools and ease of use.
Lisa - I don't think it gets much simpler, I have been frustrated with all my AR bookmarks and never being able to find them when I need to send a post to another member or friend. This will be a great alternate solution. IE: I just put all the Localism posts in one area for easy reference when I or another member needs them.
Pam - this will make our lives much more bookmark simple! lol~
Great Tutorial once again Brad! BTW never heard of Diigo but I have been using Social Bookmarks for a while now and you pointed out some great features Social Bookmarking has in Store. I personally love Stumbleupon :)
Hi Brad - when I saw the title of your post, I thought ( hoped) that there was going to be an AR way to organize my bookmarked posts. I'll have to check out this tool as I've been wanting a way to organize these for ages now.
Okay Brad, this is yet another GREAT TIP!!! I have TONS of bookmarked favs...now I'll just have to spend the time sorting through and being more organized.
Brad - Thanks for another great tip. I have so many posts bookmarked the first way that it is sometimes hard to find the one that I am looking for. Diigo sounds like a great solution.
I think I'll try the 3rd way. I've been wondering about a way to organize all my bookmarks. I've got so many! This should work well. Thanks for sharing.
Brad, another informative post to help the members, great job! I use it, but rarely go back to check the bookmarks because the real important ones to me I put in my e-mail box as a link.
Thank you for some great information. It can be a bit overwhelming when all of a sudden you discover that you have over 100 bookmarks - NOW where is the one you are looking for??? Dingo looks like a sure bet.
I've been saving them in my Google Notebook. But your idea is great because of the social aspect of it. Google notebook is private. So if you like more privacy, Google notebook is a great way to organize all your posts and even clip out only the parts you want.
You just keep giving me more things I want to get done:)
Brad ~ Thank you for sharing this info. I have sooo many posts bookmarked and often forget why they are booked marked and most of the time, I have "no" time to go back over them. I know valuable info is marked in them somewhere but cannot remember where to look (you know what I mean).
I knew there have to be a way to manage them! You're the best!
Brad, I almost didn't click on this because I figured it was just about the old-fashioned way to bookmark...leave it to you to notch it up two levels. Thanks!
I just got back to my room here in Monterey. Pat Kitano did a great job today at the CRS event. I got to meet so many people and was honored to be a part of the Blogging Panel today. I am stepping out for a bite to eat with the Beautiful wife who waited for me all day, then I'll be back to enjoy all your comments and hopefully address any questions anyone has. Venancio, since your comment is right here in front of my face, I'll respond now.... we'll get your profile setup correctly. I'll help you figure it out my friend.
Thanks to everyone for reading and taking the time to comment, I really do appreciate them and you! :-)
Here's a few of the things I found that I really like about Diigo: Del.icio.us is a great site too, but Diigo has many more options, it's very user friendly and it's setup for the beginner who wants to start Social Bookmarking and managing their valued sites, share them publically, and blog about them on the fly. I love the annotation ability and the one click bookmarking. What got my attention in particular is the ability to...
Send to Blog
makes it super easy for you to blog about your latest web reading, taking advantage of your Diigo highlights and notes!
Enhanced Linkrolls
Not just simple linkrolls, Diigo "Enhanced Linkrolls" allow you to share your annotated webpages right on your site!
Diigo Tagrolls
Tagrolls are a way for you to display your Diigo tags as part of your website.
Daily Blog Post
enables you automatically post entries to your blog(s) every day containing your latest Diigo annotated bookmarks
Thanks, Brad. I just signed up for del.icio.us and spend some time learning it and now this great post about something that sounds better! When I was reading the tutorial for del.icio.us, I was thinking that this is what I had needed for so long and that it thinks like I think - cross referencing with tags - it's what I love to do to be more efficient. I will definitely be checking out diigo also.
Sharon - del.icio.us is a great tool and so is Stubleupon, Digg, I think there are a dozen or so, but this one is a personal favorite just because of the ease of use, and they seem to be on the cutting edge of some things I needed to be able to do with my bookmarks. :-)
OK Brad I've just gotten back in the rain and have decided that I have to make a point EVERYDAY of just learning. You always have so much info to share and I really need to start being a better student!! Thanks for all you do!
Brad, I had to unistall the Diigo tool bar because my internet explorer browser started acting up. I think the Diigo slowed it. Have you have similar experience with it. My browser has worked fine since I unistalled it.
I hope AR will still look at improving the organizational features for bookmarked posts.
Matt - I have StumbleUpon as well, they have some of the same features, but being able to create lists, groups and folders to store your Bookmarked or fav pages and posts is Diigo's main claim to fame. It's easy to do the same things as on StumbleUpon, But I like the customization capabilities, the anotation feature which only saves what you want, and the ability to Blog or send it to others all as an open source. There's more to just Bookmarking a Fav and then never going back because it's lost or you have too many. Diigo will let you manage, create, annotate, share, organize, and customize all your Bookmarks and saved sites and pages.
Brad....what would we ever do without you....I just wish I could blink and have it done. Organization takes so much time and especially when you've been sloppy. Oh well......I'll just start from NOW and eventually go back and review and organize! You help to keep us all sane! Thank you!
Joan - I ran into the exact same issue, that's why I started looking for a better way to Bookmark and manage my hundreds of favs. Bookmarking and organizing is one thing, but add Social Bookmarking to the mix and you have many more options and much more versatility.
Katerina - Google notebook is awesome, with Diigo, you can choose which Bookmarks you want to be public and which you want to be private. Man I love having options! :-)
Terrie - I know exactly what you mean. Just last week I was looking for a post that I had bookmarked using the AR Bookmark tool, but when I went to find it in the Hundreds I had saved, I spent more time trying to find it and still was unsuccessful. This is why I started using diigo. Now I can sort and categorize all my favs and not just from AR, but from the entire web. I no longer have to use my browser to fav these sites, and now their easier to find and share with others. :-)
Lizette - Sleep is for the tired! lol~ That's why I think I got the nickname ActiveBrad. There will be plenty of time for sleep when my days on earth are done. I do sleep, but I have learned to Blog with one eye open. :)
Lisa - I have not heard of Foxmarks, but Diigo will let you access your bookmarks from anywhere and on any computer that has access to the interenet. This is exactly why Browser Bookmarks and Favs are a thing of the past. What good is a saved fav on your browser at home when you're sitting with a client on THEIR computer. The open source capabilities and online resources are changing the WEB 2.0 world everyday.
Bookmarks are useless if you're not able to access them, share them, or use them as a resource after you've saved them. This applies to anything you decide is important enough to "Save For Later".
Gary - you are too funny...It must be the Tahoe altitude and thin air! lol~ Looking forward to coming up there to visit this summer. Hopefully in the next couple weeks. I'll be calling you next week, I have you and Richard on my to-do list. (I bookmarked your email to me) haha! :-)
Laura - head spins are not good but since you said in a good way, I feel better now! haha. MWA right back at ya!! I'm feeling the love for sure.. :-)))
Richard - We do have a Real Estate Technology group already, in fact if you check the groups I placed this post in, you'll find it there. Just below this post, you'll find the 5 groups I added this to. The 4th one down is the RE Technology group. Come join us, there are hundreds of subscibers with hundreds of really great posts.
Sharon - cross referencing tags on Diigo is a sinch. Doing it with other members and your sphere is very powerful. Del.icio.us has some great features and tools too. I just like that Diigo has other tools that del.icio.us doesn't right now. All these sites are constantly making upgrades and improvements based on what their competitors are doing. That will never change, so people just have to find what works for them.
Sandy - welcome back. I was wondering where you went? It's great to see you back in the rain working, playing and hopefully having some fun and getting some business. I would take some time and really focus on your Localism posts and content right now. My Diigo site has all the Localism posts Bookmarked and is public if you want to see all the Localism posts that may be helpful to you right now. :-)
Richard, have not seen any issues with the Diigo toolbar causing any problem with any browser. I have it on my Firefox and my Internet Explorer and it works great. You might want to send Diigo an email or check their FAQ's and see if they can assist you with that. It may be the version of Browser you're running, or it could be something entirely different that has nothing to do with your Browser or Diigo. RAM memory, cache needing to be cleared, hard drive optimization, insufficient memory, it could be a number of things. Even your internet connection could have had a "Clip" causing it to lock up or load slowly.
Jeanean - time always has been and always will be an issue. Management of time and trying to master it will be a life long endeavor, at least for me. Even now, I have to go back over to my AR Bookmarks and start moving the "Elite" ones over to Diigo. It will take me some time, but when it's done, it will save me more time in the future, and benefit others who I'll have the opportunity to share with. :-)
OK, Brad, I'm going to sign up for diigo right now. I will definitely have way too many tabs not to be able to categorize them. Last night I tried to install the Firefox add-on for delicious and it wouldn't work - I have a Macbook, do you have any suggestions? There wasn't an indication that it was preventing a popup. I'm assuming diigo has a firefox addon as well?
Thanks again! Being in the AR community and reading your post has got to make me smarter. Thnnks for making things so that a low teck person like me can understand! :)
Hi Brad---hey you were right--a so easy a Caveman could do it---take it from The Cavewoman Realtor---now this one was easy! But I still need to know! Thanks
Sharon - I have a MACBook Pro and Diigo works great with Firefox on both my MAC and My PC. There are other social bookmarking sites if you find this one doesn't do what you need. I just heard about another one today called sharethis.com from my friend over at RealBird. Let me know if you need any help with this. :-)
Brenda - we call it technobabble, lol~ I even named one of my Blogs that, "TechKnowBabble" just because there is so much of it to try and keep up with and to try and simplify for others.
Doreen - I think you might like this tool. There are quite a few others, if this one doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll make sure you get the best one that works best for what you need. :-)
Bookmarking post is now more useful and fun with tools like these. Bookmark away, you'll feel much better now that you are more organized, and the ideas for Blog posts will now be right at your fingertips. Love it! :-)
Thanks Brad. Life just happened and pretty soon days turned into week then months. But I'm really glad to be back and reconnecting. I will take a look at the posts you mentioned and I too was thinking about really amping up my community posts for Localism. Thanks for the tips!!
I'm a new member to active rain and for the last few days before I joined, I was making my way around the posts, trying to figure out where to begin, how to appoach it and I was more than a bit overwhelmed.
So anyway I came across this post with your recommendation for DIIGO, so this morning I got up early to spend time on Active Rain (only to find out that after looking at other post times 5am isn't early in the Active Rain world) and my first TO DO before reading the posts for newbies was to get my DIIGO installed. So it's in and I'm ready to begin...I ALWAYS had trouble in the past finding things I wanted to refer back to later and I'm certain I will find a ton of things in Active Rain posts that I'll want to save. So thanks a million!
Celeste - I have already moved many of my AR bookmarked posts over to Diigo. I'm really diggin it! I have added a button on my side bar toward the bottom of the page where you can check out al the Bookmarks I have moved. They will be easy for me to find, refer to, and share with others now. Feel free to check it out.
Michael - you can see how I'm using Diigo to do the same thing you are. I added a button on the sidebar of my Blog towards the bottom, just under the copyspace button, if you click on it, you can see how I've categorized and sorted out all my posts, bookmarks, cool sites, videos, and AR / Localism posts. I love doing it this way, now I can find the stuff I want to share with others easily and quickly. It's a very cool tool for me personally. :-)
Here's a link just in case you don't want to go searching for it on my sidebar:
I clicked on the DIIGO short cut and saw your lists but couldn't it on your sidebar. Would it have looked the same? Just wondering. Right now I am using the tool bar but wondered if there was an even better way to have it available to me. Thanks for all your tips etc. i've put you as a short cut so I could make sure to read all of your blogs.
Celeste - the link on my sidebar looks the same. It's down the page a bit by my copyspace graphic. You can use any image to have a link to your bookmarks, the toolbar is a convenient way to keep adding the bookmarks to Diigo. I am starting to build quite a library of categorized and sorted bookmarks than I plan to use much more now because of diigo.
I mastered Bookmarks long ago for my shopping orders! Ha But how do you get all the affilliate logos on your page? If I can't copy & paste it I'm lost.
Claudia - the buttons and badges (affiliates) on my sidebar come from various sources, widgets, buttons etc. If you need help adding any of these or others to your Blog sidebar, just contact me and I'll walk you through it. :-)
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I had never used this tool but after reading your post I went straight for it and I got to say it's pretty cool and I like it better than my old way of saving things in my desktop folders.
Meli - you will see a logo from Diigo on the sidebar of my blog, (right side of screen) and there you can actually see how I'm using this to keep organized but also to be able to share some of the greatest values I find here and outside the rain.
It has become my resource for posts, websites, cool tools, even the AR staff's personal Blogs which many here don't even know exist. I call it my little Hiddiigo Treasure! :-))
I always like to have more than one way to do something. Thank you for the tagging information. This was really needed and I appreciate your taking care of us.
Brad, thank you for the information. I am in a bit of a hurry now so I will have to just use AR's bookmark feature for now and then check out Diigo when I have some time. It is so nice to find this post since I knew that I had seen something about bookmarking but didn't seem to have the brain power to recall how to do it! Thanks again!
Clarence - welcome to AR where great information abounds~ The best way to utilize the information you find on AR is to try and manage it in some sort of systematic manner. Social bookmarking is a great way to do this, and also gives you the ability to share with others what you have found useful. :-)
Scott - it's been very useful to me using the Diigo bookmarks, now I'm looking at how we can allow others to bookmark our posts using sharethis or addthis. Still doing some research on those tools right now...
As always Brad, one of your posts seems to pop up with answers as soon as we find a question... do you have a strange telepathic power or do you just know what we newbies need???
Sonja - I use option 3 almost every day. I just used it to bookmark a site called audio jungle just a moment ago. Everytime I find a great post, Blog, website etc., I bookmark it to Diigo.com and sort it into categories for myself and others to use and reference later. Check it out, it's open to the public, you can click on the Diigo Button over on the right side of my Blog. (it's toward the bottom) :-)
I'm gonna have to watch that video again, maybe twice. I also need to thank Trunda for asking the question. I just bookmarked a blog and even as I did it thought "will I remember why and be able to pick it out of the list if I do?". And I must confess, I still use the browser Add to Favorites. Should have known there was something better.....
Terri - you just have to do what works best for you. I still use all three of these, but I have found using the social bookmarking method to be easier and more useful because I know where things are and I can share them with others. You can just go to my bookmarks and browse all the ones I've made public. It really is a very cool idea and concept. Works for me anyway. Thanks for commenting.
