Common Painting Mistakes

Repainting that tired kitchen? Updating that 70's bathroom? How bout spicing up the bedroom? There are common mistakes people make when repainting a room. Painting faults are often traced back to preparation faults. Incorrect application and poor work conditions are two of the most common causes. Amateurs often over brush or make the paint too thin and overload the paint brush. These mistakes can cause lots of problems in the future or in the case of gloss paints, loss of sheen. Be sure to let the first coat dry thoroughly before applying the second coat.

When you want to cover a darker colour with a fresh new colour, be sure to use the correct under coat. If not, the darker coat will still be visible through the new coat of paint. Over brushing, over thinning and over stirring may also cause the old darker coat to be visible.

When using emulsion on wood, paint may peel when surface is not properly cleaned of dust or dirt. A cure for this problem is, allow the paint to dry for one week, then rub it down with glass paper and clean the surface before applying the new coat.

Blisters on woodwork can be cured by cutting out the blistered part, filling it with fine surface filler and sanding it down. Remember to clean the surface well before you apply the new paint. When blistering is extensive, strip down all the paint and start again.

White paint can look yellowish when it lacks of light. Red paint will bleed into a new coat, so always apply a barrier coat before you apply your new coat.

Most of us dread painting our house but can't afford to pay someone else to do the job. By taking the right precautions and preparations you will make the job much easier for yourself and finish it much quicker, so you can do something you really like.
