Independent agents across the country are trying to find a solution to the increasing number of consumers utilizing the internet as their primary source of research when choosing an insurance provider.

Historically agents were able to get by using a simple formula of Yellow Page advertising, a good location and word of mouth advertising.  When speaking with agency owners their initial reaction to leveraging the internet sounds something like this:

“We’re on Super Pages and we don’t get anything out of it”

“My customer base doesn’t use the internet”

“We don’t do much internet business because ‘those’ people are tirekickers or window shoppers?”

“It won’t work in my market because my customers don’t use e-mail”

“The insurance business is a relationship business, that’s the way it is”

This type of thinking leads to a self fulfilling prophecy:

Agents who respond this way ARE IN NO DANGER OF CAPTURING MARKET SHARE FROM THE INTERNET.

Agents relying on Super Page advertising as their sole strategy will in all likelihood come to the conclusion that “YOU CAN’T MAKE MONEY THAT WAY.”

Try this:  Type in the name of your town in conjunction with the various products offered by your agency.  Then try clicking through and see where you end up.

Ask your elf this very important question:

If 70% of consumers were to find you this way- do you honestly feel like you have given your agency the highest probability of success?

If not, what is your strategy to deal with this incredible shift in the market?
