I won’t go in to the details at the moment, but I am making some changes that necessitate a new way of connecting to the internet.

very old phone

I am giving up the wired world of DSL for a Sprint Mobile Broadband Sierra Wireless AirCard 597ETempe Real Estate laptop . Hmmm, that was a mouthful.

Talk about day and night! This is fast. At least way faster than what I am used to.

I also purchased the Cradlepoint MBR1000 Mobile Broadband Router. This allows me to connect my PC to the internet, along with networking my printer, scanner, etc.

Lest you think I am the tech savvy type, I must confess, I have a friend who is coaching me through all of this. I just wish he was paying for it, too! LOL!

I will not put down DSL, it is very reliable and being connected to the telephone network, there are very few problems. The only real issue is when you are on the fringes of the Central Office area, as I am, that distance causes, well, it causes slower speeds. I am sure there is technology in the works to deal with that and if you are in the original range for DSL you probably have it pretty good. If you have VDSL you have it made! At some point in the future, if I move to an area with VDSL, I would seriously consider that option. I have heard many positive reports about VDSL. People seem to love it! (I am retired from Qwest, so this would be a disclaimer)

Doreen - I've been with Sprint for 10 years.  Used to hate their service, now I am so pleased with their customer service.  Thanks for putting this out there.  I though that it would be too slow converting but you've told me differently.  Thanks.

Doreen,

I have found that cox high speed internet has given me the best speed, but have always had slow connections on the run.  Good luck with that.

I have been thinking about making the cable to mobile broadband but have been concerned about connecting to my peripherals, so that router looks pretty sweet

Mark,  Are you talking about Sprint wireless?

Hi Gary, This is a wireless solution that allows me access almost any place I need it.

Regina, I haven't connected all of it yet, but it's looking like it will be very cool.  :)

Barbara,  This is really pretty easy, so far.  I'll let you know how it ends up...

Doreen,

I haven't made the jump to a wireless card; I'll be interested in following your experience with this.  BTW, I signed up another member in the Rain yesterday.  250 points for signing her up, and then I helped her get her info filled in on the profile page and write a little newbie post.  She is up to 1150 points in half an hour, and I got another 115 points on that.  You're on a tear; hope you make the 50K before noon Monday!

Help me with the speeds please.  I have a wirless card from Verizon, but they tell me even the wireless cards in a town that serves them (not all towns do) will be about 1/2 the speed of cable or DSL.  Tethering your cell phone is 1/2 the speed of a wireless card.  I had DSL at the office, but moved to where I was on the fringes and they couldn't serve me.  We changed to Cable, and I've upped the speed to 15mb down, 3mb up.  Faster than a T-1, but without the phone support.

Greg,  I don't know that the card I have from Sprint will hit 15mb.  That would be nice.  I'm just happy it is way faster than what I had...

Doreen,

Jeez I remember when a pager was rocket science! It amazes me that in such a short time we have all these decisions and I can't wait to see what changes in the next 5 years. For the record I have DSL at home and office and a Blackberry and do just fine! Thanks for the post.

Dave,  I remember when I started working for Mountain Bell...

a pager was called a 'bellboy' and you only gave the number to one person, because all it did was make a noise or vibrate.

a 'wireless' phone was in a suitcase and you had to have a valid reason to even be on the huge waiting list for one.

having a phone you could unplug was really cool

in some cases, even having a phone was just the exciting part.

Now, when I hit enter on my laptop and it doesn't instantly respond, I am annoyed!  LOL
