WOW! Here we are at the end of July and gas in Oklahoma City is averaging $3.48 per gallon! That's down $0.32 from the end of June, but it's $0.80 higher than 1 year ago.

Nationally, the average price is $3.90 per gallon which is down $0.19 from the end of June, but $1.05 higher than this time last year.

What really gets me though, is most people say $3.48---that's cheap! Cheap compared to what? Yes, it is cheap compared to a month ago and I am thankful for that. But compared to a year ago we're paying out the nose. How quickly we adapt--it's no wonder prices keep going up, "THEY" know they can get by with it.

I think we better enjoy these lower prices while we can because I'm pretty sure we'll see prices go back up rather quickly (Labor Day?).

Do you want to see something scary? If you use Quicken or something like it, go back and look at how much you've spent on fuel this year vs last year. Then do the same thing for groceries and dining out--made your day didn't it? Now look at where your 401k/IRA is compared to last year. THIS is why people are scared, and this is a big reason people aren't buying as many houses--we see our net worth shrinking and money doesn't buy as much. So what to do?

1. Stocks and mutual funds are on sale! It's all cyclical so take advantage of low share prices by adding to your retirement accounts.

2. Know where your money goes. As depressing as it may seem you have to know how much you're spending on gas, food, etc. in order to make adjustments.

3. If you can't pay cash, don't buy it.

4. You absolutely must have an emergency fund! Experts recommend 3-6 months but if that seems impossible, at least have $1,000 set aside for surprises.

5. Ask your accountant if you should adjust how many dependents you claim--this could give you an automatic raise if you're not claiming enough.

I could go on but that's enough for now. If you start with these 5 changes I promise you'll feel better about your money situation. Remember we can't control what everyone else does, we can only control what we do.

Steve, when it gets down to 2.00 a gallon I will say 'Now that is Reasonable!'  I still remember cheap - and we are far from it.

Steve,

The gas companies want you to think you are getting a deal.

WOW, I which the gas in CT was that amount. I can't believe how high oil has risen on such a short period of time! All because of speculation and issues that never happens.

I hope we stay continue to push for alternative oil and stop giving other countries our hard earned money!

One can blame who they want but it will be sold to the highest bidder just like any of our houses.

I definitely agree that we have to pursue alternative energy. Natural gas, wind power, and converting coal to gas, to name a few.

Wow, consider yourself lucky!.......its $4.25 per gallon here in the San Francisco Bay Area, and that's only if you buy the "cheaper" brand gas.  My prediction is $5 per gallon by early 2009.

Makes sense though....Gas supply worldwide is dwindling, and with huge emerging industrial countries like China & India increasing their own demand for gas, the prices are only going to get higher, and much quicker than we would expect.

A guy named Marion King Hubbert predicted all this in 1956 with his "Peak Oil" theory, which you can read about on Wikipedia:

Unfortunately Peter I think you're probably right. Don't forget  there are many other events that could trigger price increases--a hurricane in the wrong place, war with Iran, etc.

We are still over $4 but I saw one station today at $3.97 for regular.  Too bad I have to buy high test.

We are truly blessed here in Oklahoma. In addition to gas prices lower than most places (3.47 avg this morning), our median home price is about $133,000 and the average home price is approximately $160,000, giving us a very low cost of living. Anyone want to move to OKC? I know a good realtor! ;)

Price is relative... and if you relate it $4.00+ a gallon, it becomes 'cheap' by comparison only. the sad thing is that when the gas price spikes, so does everything else, and unlike gas.... THOSE PRICES do not come back down, as a general rule.

Kevin.....you are so right, and as I mentioned in the blog, $3.48 is still $0.80 higher than last year. There are so many issues with our economy right now.....I think everyone really needs to stop and evaluate what their "needs" truly are vs. their "wants." We are so spoiled......I saw a show on HGTV recently where a young couple expecting their first child felt like they really "needed" a 3500 sq ft house! Wanted, maybe but needed, no. It's no wonder we're in such a fix.

3.48 is cheap but 2.50 is so much better. I'm ready for 1.99. Hopefully soon.

I was telling one of my friends that after reaching the heights gas prices did, the powers that be would probably drop them to the mid-$3 range and everyone would breath a sigh of relief and think that is great.

I'm hoping it will go lower but there's no way we will see the prices of last year IMHO
