The Bad Habit

I started smoking at the Age of 16 (11 years ago) just like the consensus says, I fell into peer pressure and all it took was one drag and I was hooked.

Being a teenager a lot of things looked cool to me and living on the edge made it even more appealing.

Granted smoking was nothing new to my family.  My Dad having has smoked for 10 years, my Brother smoked for 5 years, My Sister smokes and My Aunt still smokes.

Everyone close to me has been trying to get me to stop smoking for a long time.

I figured since I was in Sales, Coffee and Smoking comes natural since most people in my workforce do it.

Motivation to Quit

Every smoker out there knows smoking is not healthy and is bad for them but not everyone knows how hard it is to quit when knowing that information.

Statistics show that smoking is even more addicting than heroin nowadays with the increase in nicotine chemicals.

I have tried Patches, Gum and even the Cutting down to 2 cigarettes a day, none of which worked.

Every time I tried to quit and was unsuccessful just made my motivation even more and more diminished.

Even loved ones have preached to me to quit and most of the time just flew over my head.

The Final Kick

They say everything happens for a reason and I am a firm believer in that.

This year has been sort of a Reborn year from the previous gloom year.

Another major influence on my decision is from my Girlfriend who has inspired me to become a better person in which recently have been working out more, eating more healthy and having the desire to quit smoking.

TIPS

  • What I learned from my past attempts in quitting smoking was that the nicotine replacements were useless because nicotine is a drug and you just can't replace a drug with another drug.
  • Cutting down to 1 or 2 smokes a day is useless, because it just refreshes the nicotine in your system even with only ONE puff!
  • The best way to quit is cold turkey and statistics show that quitting cold turkey is the most successful and most long term way to quit.
  • All it takes is 72 Hours to completely flush the nicotine out of your system, if you can manage not smoking one puff for 72 hours then the physical need is gone and you just have to overcome the mental side.

I am happy to say I have officially Quit

The hardest part for me was the first 72 hours but after that my body started getting used to the drug being gone and now its just a mental game for me.

It has been almost 3 weeks now without one puff!

There is so many good reasons why I quit but the most important is that I want to live.

I am saving a lot more money, I don't have to worry about smoke offending my clients anymore, having no control over something, kissing like an ashtray and worrying about my health.

Its like a new life for me, Its been so long to remember what it was like not smoking but now I see the difference in my Health and Will power.

I know now if I can quit smoking, I can do anything!!

Justin,

Congratulations! This will be challenging, but I know you can do it

Congratulations -- I QUIT 22 years ago !  It was one of the most difficult things I ever did.  If you ever get the urge -- go to the lung ward of a hospital and hang out!  That will keep you on track!

Excellant, I hope you go the distance; some people say even years after they quit that they still want one.  It's got to be one of the hardest things to do.  Good Luck!!

GREAT JOB.. I quite 4 years ago after 15 -20 years .. just said enough is enough I will not let this run my life I will run my life .. I am very very competitive and that is how I did it I said I willwin My trick was every time I saw someone smoking I would say man look at that that just sick that so URGGGG .. I would paint in my mind the image of how negative smoking is in the mind of so many and I would say .. I am so glad I am not that person today..

Bravo, Justin.  I smoked years ago and know now hard it is to quit.  I cannot stand to even smell the smoke now.

07/31/2008 08:56 PM by Sheila Reeves (KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY)

Those that I know who have quit, all say it comes down to one thing.  You have to make the decision that you have quit.  I talked to someone the  other day whose last puff was a couple of years ago.  She had tried and tried and tried to quit, like so many smokers out there.  She finally got mad one day and just made the decision that she was no longer a smoker...and from that day forward, her conviction won the battle.  She said she never had another problem from that moment on.

Justin...I've just opened a group that deals with health issues...
http://activerain.com/groups/betterhealth

Come join us!  The better and healthier you eat, the faster you clean out your body of the toxins, and the less likely you are to want unhealthy things again.  The group is new and like all groups it will take time to build...so tell your friends about it and come join the path to better health!

Hmmm....I fogot to say one very important thing...CONGRATS!  You have something to be very proud of.

Hats off to you!  I don't doubt for a moment how difficult it was.  I am currently trying to get off coffee and that is tough enough.  I don't smoke but at times it has appealed to me.  I won't give in!

Get & stay healthy!!!

Justin !! This is my 74th hour since I had my last puff. Above everything I am feeling the self respect I had lost 14 years ago.

The quit process is a miracle in itself. The way the body heals is so amazing. I embrace every craving I have since I am sure I will never ever get to feel that again. I wake up in the middle of the night just to realize how far I have come and smile and go back to sleep peacefully.

I can hardly wait for the coughing to begin as my lungs clean themselves.

I will never ever relapse. This is not gonna happen !!!

08/14/2008 11:53 AM by Bivek

@ Bivek - Hi there, Congrats on your success!!  It seems like we are both going through this change and I am so happy that you are taking the steps in quitting.  I hope you found the 72 hour information useful as it was very motivating to me!!  Just an update its nearly 2 months and I still haven't smoked one puff!!  Just remember all it takes is 1 puff and you will lose everything!  They say once you quit you are on probation for life, we can do it!!!

Congratulations, I have a friend who smokes and when she goes out to her car to smoke (alone) she comes back into the office, she really stinks! I cannot tell her she smells because as a smoker she would:

1. have her feeling hurt, 2. get mad at me, 3. not quit because of the smell because she can't smell it, and mostly does not believe it's that bad.

Hi Justin,

Good for you!!!  This is one of the best things you can do for your health.  You are blessed to have a smart girlfriend.

Thanks for posting your success. I have tried several times. My husband and all my family wants me to quit. I am the only smoker in my home, my family and my office.  I believe after going to the website you suggested I will start me 72 hours as soon as I get stocked up on cranberry juice, carrots and celery.

Congrats on your willpower Justin - studies show that the LUNGS (unlike the liver) are great regenerator organs and any minor changes incured in 11 years of smoking can be gone on Xray in 5 years!

many more happy Healthy years to come - you should celebrate the day you quit as another birthday - the day you helped starting your lungs regain their ol self:)

Sincerely,

Grace

@ Not Yet Licensed - Thank you and I think so too :)

@ Monica - Great news on your 1st step in quitting, its the desire to quit!  I really do hope the 72 hours trick helps you because I know it has helped me...remember not one puff for 72 hours, I believe in you and wish you the very best in quitting!!  We are all in this together!  Keep me updated!

@ Jeff/Grace - Thats a neat little fact and that actually helps my encouragement, I always wanted to quit early so that I am not too far off in the deep end and this is very encouraging thanks!
