The Power of Commenting!

By
Real Estate Agent with Silvercreek Realty Group

I have never considered myself a natural Writer.  So you can imagine my angst when I was told that I needed to BLOG to increase my SEO.  (What is SEO? is what I thought at the time.)  Never one to back down from a challenge however, I joined Active Rain and began my journey.

My first posts were torturous, and I am so thankful all the comments were kind and not brutally honest!  Something happened as I began to read the blogs of some fantastic, talented writers that happen to also be involved in the Real Estate Industry.  I began to get ideas of how to improve my writing.  "Maybe I should add paragraphs? " "It would look a lot better if I added a picture or two." "I should expound on my ideas, not just state them in one sentence."  I also got very intimidated, and was scared to write because I knew it wasn't good!  I eventually got over that, and slowly began to post again.

But I kept Reading and Commenting and Learning, most days going well beyond the 10 comments that I would receive points for.  I also learned aboutReciprocal Commenting from TLW and soon the posts I did write were getting more comments. I also found that through Reciprocal Commenting, I found my favorite people here at Active Rain.

I have improved my writing, but have no false dreams of becoming a Great Writer, like Gary Woltal I realized that I can still have success here at Active Rain, by commenting a lot.  You can see by my stats below, that I am the #1 Featured Member in Meridian, Idaho (out of 46 members), #4 and closing fast in Ada County (out of 320 members), and #9 in Idaho (out of 672 members).  You can also see that more than half of my points come from commenting, and that I have given more than DOUBLE the comments that I have received.

Am I telling you all this to look like a LOSER?  No, I'm telling you this to give others out there like myself a little hope.  If you don't get all your posts featured, and if you don't have a big following at first, just give it time!  There is room for everyone here at Active Rain!  In my humble (but accurate) opinion, if you are posting on Active Rain, but not commenting, you are missing the boat!

Remember~In 2006 Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.  She was not the lead Hudson-oscars jennifer-hudson-oscars-2008-06character, but she still got The Award!

LOL...

You can't write about this topic without someone telling me about it. One of my very first Blog Posts was ...

You guessed it...Reciprocity...It's a topic near and dear to my heart. I'm always pleased when I see The Members Get it :)

Enjoy the Rain. The place has its place in our little worlds :)

Pam, ok, I thought with Britney Spears' latest escapades she might not have been the best choice to match you up as a superstar. I hope you'll bring me back into the friend fold. Susan already disowned me because I called her an Old Shoe. She has a long memory. With you with Britney Spears it was a "Blonde" moment for me. You are "discovered" now anyway as your comments continue to climb and people forget what the heck this post was about to begin with LOL. Are you feeling the love yet??!! I think your gang is just parked here until you write your next wonderful piece. If Susan is a star on the topic of a dog leash, I suggest you take her on one on one and talk about your ironing board. Don't you just love this place? It never makes any sense to me. If you figure it out, send me the user manual.

Pam - I went back and looked at your numbers. (Pretty good post when two days later I am thinking about it.) Looked at average points per activity (post vs. comment).  You receive 12.8 pts for every comment made. While you get 205 pts for every post written. It takes you 16 comments to equal one post.  (If my math is correct. If not, blame Caldwell High School.)

Thanks guys!  I look at it like this Kevin.  I get 25 pts for each comment.  I could either write a post and get 205 pts like you showed above, or I could make 8 comments.  Many times I think it's easier to make 8 comments!

That's true, but my last comment should count as post points. But, hey, if it helps my sister in the struggle from a different mother (isn't that how it goes?) -then it's all good.

Thanks Kevin!!!  I think this post has capped out on points though......I'm not sure how they decide how many points a blog gets.  My last featured post got 500 pts, but only had 60+ comments.  This one is 100+ comments and only 475 pts......But hey, it's a lot better than 200 so I'm not complaining!!!

Nor should you :)

When you post daily and comment the total adds up.

One non-featured post is an auto 200 points. Ten comments is an auto 250 points.

That's 450 points daily for those of you are actually in this for the points :)

Pam,

Good job! Commenting takes a few minutes and includes three great uses of your time: reading an article about something you didn't know or needed to hear again, connecting with another agent and increasing your online profile.

Pam, I am new to Active Rain and found your blog post very helpful.  I have just redone my website and started bloging to increase my SEO.  The developers of my website suggested blogging on my website and active rain.  Do you have any other suggested websites to blog on?

I agree to the fullest extent. I just started using Active Rain and the more blogs I read, the more ideas I get on actually posting a blog and feeling confident in doing so. But as for now I learn each day on how to do it and just comment and put my ideas out there.

Thanks Pam!
